Student Drug Policy – High School
As followers of Jesus Christ and ones who strive to live in a Godly manner, LCCS believes strongly in the mandate that Paul gives us in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
Students of LCCS are expected to adhere to our conduct standards and provide a positive example of LCCS standards to the greater community. Students who use drugs or illegal controlled substances or are in possession of such substances reflect poorly on the Christian beliefs and values of our Lord and the school. A student who at any time (on or off campus) is under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or mood-altering substances, or who possesses, uses, distributes, dispenses, sells, or aids in the procurement of alcohol, narcotics, restricted drugs, mood-altering substances, or any substance purported to be a restricted substance or abuses over-the-counter drugs, may be subjected to discipline, including, but not limited to suspension and expulsion.
Failure to give parental consent to the published policy will result in denial of enrollment or reenrollment.
Drug Testing
While we believe that our students fall statistically well below the national averages for high school drug use, we want to do all that we can to help secure the safety and well-being of the young men and women in our care.
Research shows that drug and alcohol testing is a powerful deterrent to drug and alcohol use. The primary purpose for this policy is to give students another reason to say “no” to drugs and alcohol and aid them in remaining drug and alcohol-free.
As a Christian private school we have an advantage in our ability to offer this program. We feel this is a proactive step toward preventing a potential problem. If we were to encounter any positive test results, it would give our school the chance to intervene and assist parents in finding help for their children.
If a student does not submit to a drug test, he/she will not be permitted to participate in extracurricular activities and may be asked to withdraw from the school.
If a student is absent on the day of his/her assigned testing, he/she will be subject to testing upon his/her return to school.
How Does Drug Testing Work?
LCCS partners with Melody's Southwest Consortium, a Certified DOT Drug Testing Consortium that specializes in Onsite Student and DOT Driver Testing. When a School/District contracts with Southwest Consortium, a company that specializes in student drug/alcohol testing, a certified collection technician will administer the testing process. Their method of screening is certified by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
LCCS has elected to use the urine analysis test. This method was chosen because urine tests have been proven to be more accurate and are less expensive than other methods (saliva, hair). The test will screen for amphetamines, marijuana, cocaine, opiates, and methamphetamines. In addition, LCCS has also elected to have a nicotine test and alcohol test along with the 5 panel test.
We will randomly drug test students in 9th – 12th grade. Once a student is tested, his/her name is returned to the collective pool for further selections.
Test Results
Southwest Consortium will only report the results to one authorized person of LCCS. That person will be the Dean of Students. By company policy, they do not release any information to parents.
At LCCS, we prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of all students. As part of our commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment, the following policy outlines the procedures and consequences for students who test positive for drug use.
If a student tests positive for drug use, the family will be contacted by the High School Dean to schedule a confidential conference. The conference will cover the following key points:
Parental Notification: Parents will be notified either by phone or in an in-person meeting.
Test Results: A copy of the student’s test results will be provided to the parents, along with an explanation of the findings.
Behavior Contract: The student will be placed on a Behavior Contract, which will include the following terms:
The student may receive a one-day In-School Suspension (ISS). Parents will be responsible for a $120 fee for paid supervision during this time.
The student must attend a mandatory meeting with the school counselor. The counselor will determine if a follow-up plan is necessary.
Mandatory drug testing will be required for the student for the remainder of the school year.
Additional consequences may be issued at the discretion of the school administration based on the specific circumstances.
If a student tests positive a second time within the same school year, the following consequences will apply:
Out-of-School Suspension (OSS): The student may be suspended from school for a period determined by the administration.
Removal from Leadership and Extracurricular Activities: The student will be removed from all leadership roles (if applicable) and will be prohibited from participating in any extracurricular activities for the remainder of the school year.
Mandatory Drug Testing: Drug testing will continue to be required for the remainder of the school year.
Counselor Meetings: The student must attend scheduled meetings with the school counselor. The frequency of these meetings will be determined by the administration.
Expulsion: Depending on the details, expulsion may be deemed necessary by the administration.
Additional consequences may be issued at the discretion of the school administration based on the specific circumstances.
Upon a third positive drug test, the following actions will be taken:
The student will be asked to withdraw from LCCS. In cases where withdrawal is not an option, the student may be expelled.
The primary goal of this policy is the restoration of the student by offering pathways to success and personal growth. LCCS is dedicated to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for all students, and we strive to help students make positive choices. The administration reserves the right to issue consequences on a case-by-case basis based on individual circumstances.
