The Advanced Placement Program® is a program sponsored by the College Board®. The AP® program provides motivated high school students with the opportunity to take college-level courses in a high school setting. Students who participate in the AP® program not only gain college-level skills, but in many cases, they also earn college credit during high school. AP® courses are taught by specially trained high school teachers who follow course guidelines developed and published by the College Board®.
By participating in the AP® program, LCCS supports the following classes that are equivalent to a first-year college course. AP® course offerings are subject to enrollment and may not be offered every year.
AP® Art
AP® Biology
AP® Calculus
AP® Chemistry
AP® Computer Science Principles
AP® Computer Science A
AP® English Language and Composition
AP® U.S. Government
AP® courses are rigorous. Some AP® courses may require work prior to the beginning of the school year. Also, there may be required AP® review sessions outside of the school day during the month of April. In order to receive college credit, students must earn a passing grade on the nationally administered AP® tests in May. AP® test scores range from a score of “1” (no recommendation) to “5” (highly qualified). The College Board® considers the score of “3” to be passing; however, colleges and universities vary in their standards for granting college credit and reserve the right to deny credit for AP® courses completed. The expectation is that every student takes the AP® Exam for the courses in which they are enrolled.
