Introduce New Historical Unit
Introduce the week's reading selection and historical topic. Build background knowledge, discuss essential questions, set learning objectives, and introduce key vocabulary and spelling words that connect to both subjects.
Tuesday
Guided Reading & Annotation
Primary & Secondary Sources
Read and annotate literary or informational texts while analyzing historical documents, maps, photographs, or artifacts. Identify text evidence, author's purpose, perspective, bias, and reinforce vocabulary and spelling.
Wednesday
Writing Practice
Historical Writing
Students complete paragraphs, essays, CER responses, diary entries, letters, or timelines using text evidence from ELA and historical sources. Emphasize correct use of vocabulary and spelling words.
Thursday
Small Group Instruction & Differentiation
Research & Project Work
Provide targeted reading intervention or enrichment while students research historical topics, collaborate in groups, organize notes, and complete projects. Reinforce vocabulary through games, discussion, and spelling practice.
Every Other Friday
ELA Review & Assessment
History Review & Assessment
Reading comprehension quiz, vocabulary review, spelling test, historical discussion, document analysis, debate, short presentation, or unit assessment. Students reflect on learning and set goals for the next unit.
