What is the Upward Bound Program?
Upward Bound is a college-prep program for first-generation college-bound or low-income high school students. We provide intensified services and regularly meet with our students to ensure they succeed in high school, attend and finish college. We provide support for academic, professional, and personal development.
Our services include one-on-one and group meetings with the assigned Coach and College Aide, Saturday Academy, tutoring, enrichment field trips, film screenings, and a summer program. Students are exposed to a wide range of future possibilities, meet like-minded students from Long Beach and surrounding areas, and are mentored to help them reach their potential.
How do I qualify for the Upward Bound program?
We are currently recruiting freshmen – juniors with a 2.5 or higher GPA. (Rising freshmen would need to have a middle school GPA/report card)
Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
First-generation college-bound and/or low-income
Or has a need for academic support in order to pursue higher education
Willing to participate in programming after school and on weekends; a minimum of bi-weekly basis
What else does Upward Bound do?
Upward Bound provides support to help your student succeed. We are able to expose them to opportunities that they may not otherwise experience. We are a free, federally-funded program. Our role is to help parents/guardians, teachers, and counselors in our collaborative pursuit of students' success.
We also have a parent support group that meets once a month. Various topics are covered, including financial literacy/planning and wellness/health.
