One of the most common issues that university professors and employers lament is the fact that younger people do not know how to write a professional email. Because this is a college-level course, it is imperative that you develop stronger written communication skills that utilize language that is appropriate to your audience.
Your task is to compose a professional email to me introducing yourself, your interest in and concerns about AP Psychology, and other information that will help me understand you better. (Yes, I already know quite a bit about all of you, but I’d like to know more!)
Your email must use well-written, complete sentences free of spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. You are not to use slang or colloquial abbreviations (i.e. language you would use with your friends, in text messages, etc.). Refrain from using ALL CAPS because this conveys an angry, frustrated tone. Similarly, do not use an excessive number of exclamation points (!!!!!) or emoticons/emojis, as these will detract from your professional tone. You must reread and revise your email before sending it to me. If your email does not adequately comply with professional standards, you will simply get a reply from me telling you to “try again.”

- The subject of our email must be: Introduction to [YOUR NAME], AP Psychology
- You must include a greeting salutation
- Dear [recipient’s name],
- Good morning/afternoon/evening, [recipient’s name],
- The body of your email must answer the following (NOT in one large paragraph. Make this email sound more natural rather than a simple question and answer email) …
- Introduce yourself
- What are your hobbies? What do you like to do for fun?
- What extracurricular activities are you involved in or plan to be involved in?
- What are your goals/plans post-high school?
- Why are you taking AP Psychology? What are you looking forward to in this class? What areas of psychology interest you?
- What are you most concerned about in taking AP Psychology (or any AP class)?
- How will you manage your time throughout this upcoming year?
- What study strategies do you currently use?
- What else should I know about you so that I have insight into you as a person?
- Include a closing salutation

A common struggle for students in AP courses is the vocabulary encountered in the readings and exam questions. These words are not necessarily specific to AP Psychology. Rather, they are higher level academic vocabulary that often appears in the SATs, ACTs, and college-level texts.
To prepare, you will be responsible for studying these vocabulary words in one of two methods:
- Create a QUIZLET set with the vocabulary word and definition.
- Create a set of physical flashcards (vocabulary word and drawing/picture on one side; definition on the other side)
In addition to the AP Psych terms you will need to learn, these academic words will assuredly appear on quizzes throughout the year.
