Hosted by Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley, the Scientific Leadership and Management Skills Course (SLMS) is designed for senior postdoctoral researchers who are preparing for leadership roles in academia, national laboratories, or industry. This highly interactive program goes beyond scientific expertise to help participants develop the leadership and management skills needed to build and lead successful research teams.
Over the course of three sessions held across three consecutive weeks, participants will learn from renowned speakers, engage in small-group discussions, and work through real-world leadership scenarios with peers from across the research community.
As part of the program, participants will complete the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment to gain insight into their communication preferences and leadership style. The course also explores practical strategies for:
Leading in an inclusive research environment
Motivating and developing team members
Creating a positive and productive lab culture
Navigating difficult conversations, negotiation, and conflict
