Seismic Safety & Modernization (SSM) - "Collaboration Commons"
The Seismic Safety & Modernization (SSM) New Facility project is a multi-year planning and construction effort intended to address seismic safety issues and emergency response capabilities specifically related to Building 54, which formerly housed the cafeteria.
The SSM New Facility will be a 47,743-square-foot building which would consolidate dining, health services, and conference space. The result would be a more operationally efficient campus for Lab employees, visitors, and guests.
The project will demolish Building 54 (Cafeteria), vacate Building 26 (EH&S), and create one building to be situated on the current Building 54 site.
The new name for building 180 was revealed at the 2024 Lab Holiday Celebration. "Collaboration Commons" will be a welcoming place for Lab employees, visitors, and guests to meet for food and beverage services, conferencing, and Operations services such as Security, Human Resources, and the Health Services Clinic.
Transit Hub and Utilities Project (THUP)
The Transit Hub and Utilities Project (THUP) is scheduled to take place in tandem with SSM. THUP's scope includes the installation and relocation of several utilities in preparation for SSM.
