Venue

Berkeley Lab
Berkeley, California

NUG 2023 will be held in Shyh Wang Hall (Building 59) on the campus of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) in Berkeley, California, USA. (Remote attendance options are also available.) Wang Hall houses the NERSC machine room and staff offices alongside the computer and computational sciences divisions and ESnet, DOE's high-speed network backbone for researchers.

Berkeley Lab is situated on the hillside directly above and adjoining the campus of the University of California Berkeley

A site access pass will be required for anyone planning to attend in-person. Please fill out the registration form and indicate "In-Person Attendance," and fill out the remaining portion of the form.

Getting to the Lab

Lab Shuttles

Berkeley Lab operates its own shuttle bus service for employees and visitors. NUG attendees staying downtown will use the Blue Route, which has stops in downtown Berkeley near the BART station and around the perimeter of the UC Berkley Campus. Catch the "Uphill" Blue shuttle in front of Target near Shattuck and Allston Streets. Use the TripShot app to plan a ride, look up schedules, find stops, and for real-time arrival information.

Sit-down Scooters

You may also rent a Veo sitdown scooter and ride to campus.

Interactive Map

The Berkeley Lab campus interactive map can help you navigate around the campus. (Pro tip: You may also hear the campus referred to as the hill, as in, "Is that office on the hill?")

Getting Around the Bay Area

Public Transit

The San Francisco Bay Area's, many public transit systems are the best way to get around the area. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is the intercity light rail system. In addition, each city, county, or region operates its own local transit system. In Berkeley, AC Transit is the local system. San Francisco's Municipal Railway (MUNI) serves the city and county of San Francisco. Local commuter ferries also offer a fun (and fast) way to get between major cities around the San Francisco Bay.

While prices and routes will vary between systems, nearly all accept the Clipper Card as a means of payment. You can purchase an adult Clipper card for $3 at one of several locations (including any BART station) or order it online before you arrive.

Where to Stay

Hotels are plentiful in the area. Two that are close to the downtown Berkeley Lab shuttle stop include

Another option is to stay on the Berkley Lab campus at the Berkeley Lab Guest House. Due to construction, however, on-site food services are limited.

Taking the Shuttle from Downtown Berkeley

The Berkeley Lab Blue Shuttle (Uphill route) picks up on the East side of Shattuck Avenue between Alston Way and Center St. The stop is near Target, in front of the Jupiter restaurant and a BART (regional light rail) entrance that has a covering with stairs leading down into the station. A small sign on the pole indicates the Berkeley Lab shuttle (in addition to other routes that serve the stop).

Board the shuttle bus and show the driver a copy of your visitor pass and a photo ID. (Do not take other shuttle routes such as Orange.) Tell the driver you are going to the "Building 65 stop" and ask them to let you know when you are there.

When the Shuttle arrives at Blackberry Gate (the main gate for Berkeley Lab), site security will call in your name and confirm that you are on the visitor list. While this is happening, look up and to the right. Building 59, the site of the NUG meeting, will be visible.

After the shuttle passes through the gate, it will climb an incline and turn left into a circle drive with three flagpoles. Get off the shuttle at this stop and turn to face the main road.

The map below shows a birds-eye image of the route in pink. Across the street is Perlmutter Road (marked with a street sign).

Cross the main street and walk up the hill on Perlmutter Road. Use the white-painted cross-hatched pathway on the left of the road until you reach a painted crosswalk.

Cross to the right side of the road at the crosswalk. Directly ahead you will see a yellow "pedestrian access" sign that directs you behind the retaining wall and toward the Building 59/Shyh Wang Hall entrance, which has an overhang. Someone will be waiting there to let you in.

Flying to the Bay Area

Located in the San Francisco Bay Area, Berkeley Lab is easily accessible by two local airports: Oakland (OAK) and San Francisco (SFO). The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) light rail system connects both airports to downtown Berkeley. Refer to the airport's website for information on rideshare services, taxi cabs, and other ground transportation information.
