Implementing a Site-wide Area-based Wayfinding Program
The Campus Planning group, part of the Strategic Infrastructure Office under Operations, is responsible for Site and Environmental Planning, Strategic Space Planning, and Tactical Space Planning. To enhance navigation for Lab staff, visitors, vendors, and emergency response teams, Campus Planning has initiated a multi-year comprehensive wayfinding plan. This project encompasses several key components:
A zone-based wayfinding methodology, where the hill site is being divided into six geographic areas, or "Zones", based on Protective Action Zones. It's recommended to familiarize yourself with the Protective Action Zones.
Zone identification, where each zone will be assigned a unique number, will be applied consistently across all Lab maps. This will be reinforced through wayfinding and building identification signage.
New building identification signage that reflects zone information, as well as key building details, such as Wildfire Temporary Refuge buildings.
An update to the Lab's building number system to increase available numbers for future buildings and improve consistency across the hill site, making navigation easier.
The design of coordinated pedestrian, parking, and shuttle bus signs provides a cohesive wayfinding experience.
