Another intern summer has come to a close at the JGI. Interns contributed to a number of projects, from refining lab protocols at the bench to applying artificial intelligence to aspects of research questions.

Sean Saki worked with Zhong Wang on a project titled, “Making Big Data Metagenomic Clustering Scalable.”
Maria Mendoza worked with Benjamin Cole and Margo Bezrutczyk on a project titled, “Cross Species Comparison of Plant Single-Cell Transcriptomes.”
Sarina Qin worked with Frederik Schulz on a project titled, “Microbial Endosymbionts Across the Tree of Life.”
Jacob Espinosa worked with Virginia Scarlett on a project titled, “Exploring Polymorphisms Created by Transposable Elements.”
Through the JGI-UC Merced Genomics Internship, graduate students Candace Cole, Mo Kaze, Akshay Paropkari, Vicente Ramirez and Rhondene Wint had Summer 2018 internships. The students’ research culminated in presentations on their work delivered during the 5th anniversary celebration of the internship program.
Imelda Forteza worked with Susannah Tringe and Susie Theroux on a project involving the South San Francisco wetlands. They took samples of the ponds to study microbial communities.
Bryan Rangel Alvarez worked with Tanja Woyke and her three postdocs (Devin Doud, Jess Jarret, and Esther Singer) on a project involving computational biology. They used it to compare known organisms to unknown organisms.
