What Is The Seedlings Project About?

This EcoFAB is to study the microbes around the plants to see how they grow so that we can grow more plants for fuel, plants and other products. Those microbes are useful because they can help us improve our environment by protecting it from harmful fertilizers. The microbes in our plants help the plant live and also helps the roots of the plant collect nutrients from the soil. My objective is to figure out which media contains all the nutrients to help it grow and which media contains the sodium. I believe the lab teaches us (the students) how to properly take good care of our nature and how important plants are to our environment.

Seedlings Batch #1

This was my first batch of seeds ( this picture was taken on my 3rd day after we first started this lab) and unfortunately I didn't get really good results. I only had one seedling that began to sprout, but it wasn't enough to start my working on my EcoFab. I tried to think of possible ways where I could've went wrong. I then realized that the spot I placed my seedlings wasn't getting enough sunlight and I could have added a bit more water. From looking at my first try, I looked at what I could've done better and I applied them to my second batch.

Day 1 (07/24/2020)

This is day 1. My media A is growing more than my Media B. It could possibly be because media A has more sand than media B (I lost some sand when I first got my EcoLAB) or it could be from lack of sunlight. They've both gotten the same amount of water and sunlight. Media A is about half of an 0.3in and Media B is about 0.1in.

Day 3 (07/26/2020)

This is Day 3. (I am skipping days because i get the same results for a couple of days.) The area I placed my plants got a lot of sunlight this day so that can be part of why my results are turning out good. I made sure they got enough water and both got an equal amount. Media A is about 0.6in while Media B is 0.4in. To me, Media A looks strong but I believe that it may become weak because it is starting to turn brown in some areas while Media B has stayed green.

Day 5 (07/28/2020)

This is Day 5. They have been placed in the same area with a good amount of water and sunlight. Media A is slightly starting to turn brown which is a result of it dying. While my Media B is still growing slowly, but surely. Media A has stayed the same height for a couple of days, meanwhile my Media B is around the same height as Media A now.

My Overall Conclusion...

At first, I thought that Media B was the one with the elevated sodium because I was getting faster results from media A. Now I am getting better results from Media B since Media A is now starting to die. Media A has stayed the same height, it is starting to turn brown and become weak. Meanwhile media B is still growing and showing good results. My final prediction is that Media A is the one with the elevated sodium and Media B is the one with all the nutrients. Overall this was a great project and was fun for me because I've never planted any plants before. It was a bit discouraging in the beginning since I didn't get results, but now I've been more patient and got positive results.
