Rendering my Triceratops

Bringing the Past to Life: A Nerd Adventure at Naturalis Biodiversity Center

During a fascinating Lorentz Center workshop on integrating acquisition and AI in tomography, I had the unique opportunity to explore the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden. Known for its rich collections and innovative approaches to preservation and display, Naturalis did not disappoint, especially with its intriguing use of hand-held scanners for creating detailed tomographic images.

One of the highlights of my visit was learning that the museum had STL files of a Triceratops skeleton. As a tech enthusiast and a self-confessed nerd, the prospect of bringing this prehistoric creature to life through technology was too tempting to resist. Inspired by the workshop's focus on the intersection of technology and natural history, I decided to embark on a little project of my own.

Using Python and ITK tools, tools renowned for their capabilities in processing and visualizing scientific imaging data, I set out to render the Triceratops in a Jupyter notebook—an environment that's as versatile as it is user-friendly. The process was a blend of coding and creativity, a true testament to the power of open-source tools in making scientific data both accessible and engaging.

The result was nothing short of thrilling. To see the skeletal structure of a Triceratops take shape in my python code was a remarkable experience. It felt like a bridge was being built between the ancient past and the cutting-edge present, all within the digital pages of my Jupyter notebook.

This venture not only highlighted the capabilities of modern imaging and rendering technologies but also underscored the potential of AI and digital tools in enhancing our understanding and appreciation of natural history. It was, without doubt, a nerd adventure of the highest order—combining passion for science, technology, and history into a memorable learning experience.

Visiting Naturalis and participating in the Lorentz workshop reminded me of the limitless possibilities when we blend science with technology. Whether it’s for academic purposes, research, or pure enjoyment, the journey of discovery continues to evolve, fueled by technological advancements and a timeless curiosity about the natural world.

HUge fun!
