The Earth & Environmental Sciences Area (EESA) at Berkeley Lab is a premier Earth sciences research organization where scientists tackle some of the most pressing environmental and energy challenges of the 21st century. We have training and internship opportunities available for students and visiting faculty members looking to experience cutting-edge research at a DOE National Laboratory.
We are currently accepting applications from individuals interested in Summer 2025 internships (June - August 2025).
To apply for a 2025 Summer Internship with EESA, take the following steps
Applications due: Early Nov 2024 - Jan 2025 (depending on program)
Step 1: Review this list of EESA Research Projects and identify which projects you’re interested in.
Step 2: Email the Project Mentor and cc: Lizz Mahoney (ejmahoney@lbl.gov) & Sandy Chin (schin@lbl.gov) to express your interest and to see if you are a good fit with the project. Provide a brief description of your motivation and/or experience, and include your CV/resume. Suggest a phone or video chat to determine mutual fit!
Step 3: Review the table below of internships managed by Berkeley Lab's Workforce Development & Education Office. Identify which of the Internship programs you are eligible for. (Important: Each program has different eligibility and application requirements – review the requirements carefully.)
Step 4: APPLICATION LINKS ARE BELOW. In your application, identify the EESA Project Title and Mentor of the projects for which you would like to be considered.
Step 5: Successful candidates will be notified of their internship offer around February–April 2025.

To participate in a Berkeley Lab summer internship as a GEM Fellow, students must have been already accepted as GEM fellows at GEM member universities' Masters or PhD programs. GEM fellows are required to complete an internship with a GEM member Employer, such as Berkeley Lab.

BLUFF is a continuation of the Visiting Faculty Program (VFP). After faculty members have served three summer terms through VFP, they may apply to join the BLUFF Program. BLUFF allows faculty to continue their collaborations with Berkeley Lab.
