Greetings Far Westeners !

It is almost fall again and that means that our annual meeting is coming up. We were hoping all year that we could meet you in person, but due to the current COVID-19 situation we decided to have another virtual meeting this year. However, with digital meeting platforms improving over the past year, we are able to offer poster sessions again. We hope that you will like the program we are putting together and we already have an exciting list of plenary speakers who agreed to join us. In addition to invited talks by excellent scientists from our section, we will have contributed talks and posters from you - our members. In addition students and postdocs will have a chance to compete for awards and the first day will conclude with an exciting event - a fireside chat with the creators of the CBS hit show "The Big Bang Theory". Finally the program will offer opportunities to network and chat with other members from the section.

We are looking forward to meeting you virtually at the end of October !

Abstract Submission

We are looking forward to hear from you what you are working on. The meeting gives all students, i.e. high school, undergraduate, gradaute and post graduate scholars, the opportunity to present their work to your colleagues using an online platform. You may present your reserach as a poster on Friday or as a talk in one of several parallel sessions on Saturday.

You can submit an abstract thrpugh the abstract submission service provided by the American Physical Society (APS). To do so you will have to be a member of the American Physical Society. If you are not a member yet, the good news is that membership is free for students in the first year. If you are already a member, then now is a good time to renew that membership.

When you sign up for the APS you will be asked for an email address. Please use an address that you monitor regulalry since we will provide information about the status and scheduling of your abstract.

If you like to participate you can submit your abstract here at http://abstracts.aps.org/. The abstract submission will close on September 24. And don't forget to register for the meeting once the registration site opens by September 10.

We would like to ask all APS members who sign up for the meeting to make sure that their membership includes membership in the Far West Section as well. As a member of the society you can add section membership without extra costs to you as an "add-on".

Program

Program as of 10/18/2021. More details can be found here: https://meetings.aps.org/Meeting/FWS21/APS_epitome#all

Virtual Platform

We are still in the process of finalizing the virtual platform. In contrast to last year, when we only used zoom links for the meeting we are planning to use the Gathertown platform for the 2021 meeting. This platform allows to attendees to interact with each other - even in private - and also gives us the opportunity to have a poster session. If your are curious what Gathertown is all about, check it out at https://www.gather.town
