In honor of Second Chance Month, The Stanford Prisoner Advocacy and Resources Coalition (SPARC) and the Robert Crown Law Library invite you to to explore a collection of publications authored by currently and previously incarcerated persons. The books listed on this site are only a sampling of the Stanford Libraries' collection. If you would like additional reading recommendations, please reach out to reference@law.stanford.edu.
You are able to check out any book listed on this site! Loan periods and request processing time may vary depending on which campus library the book comes from. But regardless of whether a book is at Green, Law, or any of the other campus libraries, you can request the book through the form linked on this site and make an appointment to pick it up in front of the Crown building. Or, if you are unable to pick up material in person or would like to review a section of a publication for longer than the check out period, please request a scan of the section you are interested in. Keep in mind that scan requests are subject to copyright.

The Stanford Prisoner Advocacy and Resource Coalition (SPARC) is a student organization of law students who are interested in supporting and fighting for prisoners' rights. SPARC facilitates book clubs and writing clubs at local jails, works with local organizations to find volunteer opportunities to help families of incarcerated individuals, helps run the Prisoner Legal Services pro bono and finds opportunities to support incarcerated or formerly incarcerated individuals.

April is Second Chance Month, a time for mobilization and reflection around the barriers that formerly incarcerated individuals face. 65 million Americans have a criminal record — nearly 1 in 4 American adults. Despite this prevalence, many of these individuals, whether they served prison time for their offenses or not, face legal restrictions and social stigmas that create barriers to employment, education, and housing. These barriers to re-entry are systemic, and keep marginalized communities trapped in the prison system. Second Chance Month, facilitated by organizations like Prison Fellowship, the NAACP, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, serves as an opportunity to organize around tearing down these barriers.
