How do I get on the team?

Final Team Information

SRLA continues to be offered to students at NO COST to the student. For students who make the final roster, their race fees, uniforms, and a pair of Nike running shoes will be provided to all who qualify. Unfortunately, SRLA does not have unlimited resources to offer these precious spots to all who are interested. Each school is given a certain amount and has to narrow down the team to the maximum number that is given to them. For the 2020-2021 season, Sotomayor SRLA has been granted only 13 spots for the team. The leaders will work together to decide who will make the final roster. When we make our decision, we take many things into consideration including: attendance, effort, attitude, following school/SRLA rules, respect of peers and adults, etc. The roster has to be finalized by the first week of December. Until then, students can flow back forth between the active and inactive rosters. The active roster is only used to determine who will run the races. ALL students will be expected to practice every week.

SRLA Mission Statement

The mission of Students Run LA is to challenge underserved secondary students to experience the benefits of goal-setting, character development, adult mentoring and improved health by providing them with a truly life-changing experience: The training for and completion of the Los Angeles Marathon.

To carry out its mission, SRLA has five key objectives:

  1. To provide teacher mentors who assist students in their training and who reinforce the lessons of responsibility, discipline and goal-setting.

  2. To support students in tackling a supremely difficult goal, to break down their mental barriers to this goal, and to create “can do” attitudes.

  3. To introduce students to the pleasure of running, encourage students to develop the habit of physical fitness, and teach students aspects of healthy living.

  4. To create an opportunity for students of all ethnic groups, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds to meet one another and experience an important sense of belonging.

  5. To offer a program in which all students are welcome, all have the same chance to achieve the goal, and all become winners.

For many of the students, training for a marathon represents the first time that they have committed to a specific goal. By providing them an opportunity for incremental accomplishment and a supportive environment to help them on their way, SRLA gives the students the inspiration, excitement and encouragement to accomplish their goal.
