Math 6

Class Overview:

The 6th grade math curriculum in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is designed to build upon the foundational concepts and skills developed in earlier grades, while also introducing new mathematical concepts and operations.

The main topics covered in 6th grade math include arithmetic operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, as well as an introduction to algebraic expressions and equations, geometry, and data analysis.

In arithmetic, students are expected to deepen their understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and apply these operations to solve real-world problems. They also learn about factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers, and order of operations.

In fractions, students learn how to compare and order fractions, add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, and multiply and divide fractions. They also learn to convert fractions to decimals and percents.

In algebra, students are introduced to variables and learn to write and evaluate expressions using variables. They also learn to solve simple equations and inequalities.

In geometry, students learn about the properties of lines, angles, and polygons, as well as how to calculate perimeter, area, and volume. They also learn about transformations, such as translations, reflections, and rotations.

In data analysis, students learn to interpret and create graphs, and use data to make predictions and draw conclusions.

Throughout the year, students are also expected to develop their problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and to communicate their mathematical reasoning clearly and effectively.
