LAUSD requires a minimum of 60 hours of community service for graduation. Members of the Health Careers Academy are strongly encouraged to complete at least 150 hours. If you complete 150+ you will receive special recognition your senior year.
In order to stay on track to complete the minimum requirement of 60 hours of community service, aim to complete 10 hours per semester. Remember community service must be unpaid volunteer work and cannot be completed during class time. Your work must benefit the community. You must accurately track your hours and have proof of completion for the hours to count towards the requirement (e.g. timesheets, written verification from supervisor, etc.).
In addition to community service hours, you will also be required to participate in a minimum of 20 hours of “community partner” activities by the end of your senior year. This averages out to 5 hours per semester.
Community partners are organizations or individuals who provide extra curricular opportunities such as educational workshops, mentoring, internships, classes, job shadowing etc. Examples of community partner activities include: Scholars Leading Scholars, USC’s Neurocamp, Medical or Dental Assistant courses, etc. If you are not sure if an activity counts, ask an academy teacher or counselor for support.
*If you complete Medical Assistant, Dental Assistant or CNA courses and successfully obtain a certificate, you will meet the requirements of Community Service AND community partners hours.
You are required to obtain career certificates or certifications throughout your time in the health academy. Examples include: CPR for healthcare providers, CDC hand washing certificate, ICS 100, ICS 200, Certified Nurse Assistant Certification, Dental Assistant certificate, etc.
All Health Academy students will become CPR - or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - certified during their 10th and 12 grade years. Each certification will be active for 2 years, and will help meet requirements for actively participating in a health provider setting.
There will be opportunities to complete optional certifications based on student interest and availability. The hours it takes to complete each of these optional certifications can be used to meet community service hours requirements:
Medical Assistant Certificate
Dental Assistant Certificate
Pharmacy Assistant Certificate
Senior Care Technician
