Why is it important for your student to read everyday?
Students who are proficient readers will have the skills necessary to do well in school, graduate from college, and pursue professional careers.
What can we do at home to help my student grow as a reader?
Be a role model
Take time to read magazines, books, or newspapers to show that reading is important. If you can, try reading the same book as your child so you can talk about it together. It's a great way to bond with your teens!
2. Build up your home library
A study done of 42 nations found that having many books at home enhances students' academic performance (even if they are not the ones reading them!) Link to an article about the study
3. Help your child choose his/her own books
Whether it is a shopping trip to Barnes & Noble or a trip to the public library, taking time and effort to help your child find books is a powerful way to encourage reading.
4. Read a YA (young adult) book
Reading young adult books will not only show your child that you read too, but it may help you understand what your teen is feeling and experiencing. A bonus would be to read the same books as your child so that you can talk about them together. There are fantastic novels for teens. If you need suggestions, I'd be happy to help!
