Arroyo Seco Museum Science Magnet
GATE Program
The GATE Program at Arroyo Seco
Museum Science Magnet
At Arroyo Seco our goal is to identify gifted and talented students, including those from diverse racial, socioeconomic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds, and provide high-quality differentiated opportunities for learning that meet students’ particular abilities and talents.
The instruction in our classrooms is differentiated in order to meet the needs of all students. By differentiating in the classroom, gifted students are able to go beyond what is being taught and challenge themselves by working on something that is more at their learning level. It allows the learning to be more customized to the student.
We implement a variety of programs and instructional strategies at Arroyo Seco that address the needs of our gifted population including:
Robotics
Middle School Electives
Project Based Learning
Honors Math Classes
Experiential Learning through Field Trips (both virtual and in-person)
Individualized support before and after school
GATE in Action at ASMSM
All teachers at Arroyo Seco Museum Science Magnet utilize strategies to meet the specific needs of GATE students in their classrooms.
Please read below to see a glimpse of what is going on in just a few of the classrooms on campus.
Middle School Math
"Differentiation in my class is key to helping to support GATE students. Many of my math lessons and homework assignments have different levels of rigor that the student gets to choose "Mild, Medium, and Spicy." All students, GATE or not, have the choice to choose the level of rigor they feel ready for. Other optional challenge work is offered. All students, but especially GATE students, are expected to explain concepts using math vocabulary with precision and have word walls and opportunities to use math language frequently in my room. Depending on the lesson, GATE students are usually not offered extra supports such as graphic organizers (Figure 1) and often have to do lessons straight from the CPM textbook (Figure 2) which are usually much more rigorous than lessons that I design with support in mind. GATE students are offered math related activities that delve deeper into conceptual math and are encouraged to explore independently or through mini projects."
