What does repurpose mean? Instead of throwing away household items or recycling them, “repurpose” them. The definition of repurpose is to give new use to something for a different purpose than the one for which it was originally intended. Reusing items in our everyday lives can positively impact people, the Earth and our future. Qué significa reutilizar? En lugar de tirar artículos del hogar o reciclarlos, “reutilícelos”. 5th Grade
2022-2023
The goal of this engineering challenge is to see if you can create a fun little maze that someone can try to complete!
The materials that you will need are:
Posterboard OR a shoe box
Straws OR Popsicle sticks
Scissors
Markers or crayons
Construction paper (optional)
A small trinket (eg. A toy car) that acts as the "person" trying to get through the maze!
The goal of this engineering challenge is to use recycled materials you have around the house to make your own little junkbot!
The materials that you will need are:
Plastic bottles or Aluminum soda cans
Toilet Paper tubes
Tape
Glue
Scissors
Construction Paper
Markers
Decorations-- googly eyes, pipe cleaners, pompoms, etc.
The goal of this engineering challenge is to build a contraption for an egg that will prevent it from cracking when dropped from a tall height.
The materials that you will need:
One Egg
Any material around the house that you can recycle and re-purpose in order to build your contraption! For example, old toliet paper tubes, old cloth, bubble wrap, paper towels, plastic cups, etc.
Clean up materials-- in case your egg breaks!
Notes:
Get your family members involved! Once you have finished your contraption that will hold your egg, get your guardian or another adult to help you drop it from a high place! Please make sure you are under supervision of your guardian or an adult before you do this!
See if your egg survived the drop! Make sure to clean your mess if your egg did not survive :(
The goal of this engineering challenge is to see if you can create a structure out of paper that can hold up the weight of a textbook! It should also be the height of a ruler!
The materials you will need are:
Paper
Notecards (optional)
Scissors
Tape
Textbook (or any book with some weight)
Ruler
Rules:
If you are using paper instead of note cards, then your strips of paper should be 3''inches wide and 8''inches long. You can fold those strips into different shapes (hint: triangles are one of the most stable shapes).
You can create "planks" that can go between each level of "blocks". The "planks" need to be 3''inches wide and 8''inches long (the length of the strips of paper that will become your "blocks").
You can only tape the strips into a shape (eg. square or triangle) but you CANNOT tape the strips to other strips. Meaning-- you can lift each little "block" and not have it stuck to another "block".
It needs to be able to hold the weight of one textbook or any heavy book!
It needs to be the height of a ruler!
