The RFA SES has been developed in order to give first aiders and course providers access to an additional reflection and evaluation tool. Remote first aiders face many additional obstacles not often imagined in an urban setting. This leads to a need for capable and confident first aiders that are ready to help. Currently, first aid courses often use two forms of evaluation to assess first aider competency following the course. These tools are a written knowledge retention exam and a practical assessment of first aider skills, often through a simulation exercise. The RFA SES is designed as an additional tool to assess a first aider's self-efficacy to respond.
Thus, the RFA SES has been developed for two intended purposes:
(1) Evaluation of wilderness first aid and other types of emergency care training designed for remote geographies, communities, and worksites; and
(2) Reflection by training participants so they can self-assess their beliefs, confidence, and capacity to respond.
