I believe that justice in the context of environmental justice should mean that all people deserve a healthy environment to live in. I think that underprivileged people now deserve to have the same environmental rights as anyone else. If this was true, it would mean that no one was in poverty, underprivileged people were able to live in safe, and healthy environments, and that everyone had equitable solutions.
Through this semester, my practice of justice has grown because I have been able to work in my action project groups, which allow me to work closely with the perspective of people who are mostly underprivileged. While working with my action project, I have realized what environmental justice is, and also its immense importance. I have learned ways to give back to the community, and a lot of the issues underprivileged communities are facing today. By learning more about these issues, my group and I have developed potential solutions, and have learned to process these issues in a positive way: looking forward and trying to solve issues as a whole instead of fixing little things.
EJ Changemakers recognize oppressive social forces shaping society and are moved to take action against them.
EJ Changemakers must know how to use their voices to convince others to adopt sustainable, just, equitable, and collective behavior.
EJ Changemakers must work with a community coalition to transform institutional and political policies to restore environmental justice.
My personal praxis was assigned for me to fill out towards the beginning of the semester. While completing it, it really gave me insight on what I I knew, and what I was curious to learn. It also allowed me to give more thought to unjust systems, and made me formulate questions on how we could make solutions from that point.
This paper helped me learn how to sound convincing when trying to help people transition to more sustainable choices, especially when it was something that people might not be willing to give up.
Meeting with Sunrise Movement
I worked with Sunrise Movement and had a meeting with them earlier this year. We discussed current problems going on and how to break negative systems, especially harmful policies, to restore environmental justice.
