We are delighted to congratulate you and your son on being offered a place at Sir Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School. Moving from Year 6 to secondary school is an exciting milestone, and we are committed to making this transition a positive, supportive and confident start to life at the Math. Over the coming months, a range of carefully planned events and activities will help pupils get to know the school, staff and routines, ensuring they feel welcomed, prepared and ready to thrive from their very first day.
Our New Entrants Evening will take place on Thursday 4th June and is an important event for both parents and pupils to attend. On arrival, pupils will gather in the Sports Hall with their future year group, where they will meet their form tutor, learn their house allocation, get to know their peers, and take part in an introductory session about school routines with opportunities to ask questions. At the same time parents will attend a presentation in the Main Hall led by the Principal and senior staff covering key information about academic results, curriculum, enrichment opportunities, school ethos, character development and rules. The evening begins at 7.00pm with arrival from 6.45pm and will last approximately one hour.
Uniform
All pupils and students are required to wear the school uniform in line with the current published specifications and in an appropriate manner at all times. This policy applies during the school day, on journeys to and from school, at sports fixtures, on school trips, during external examinations (even when excused from regular attendance), and when attending school outside normal hours, such as for sports teams, school functions, or Saturday detention. Breaches of the dress code will be dealt with immediately and may result in referral to the Head of School or Pastoral Supporter, and pupils may be sent home to change by a Head of School or the Deputy Principal. Any pupil arriving without the correct uniform must report immediately to their Head of Year. The wearing of jewellery, including earrings, is not permitted except for watches or items worn on religious grounds. Authority to vary uniform requirements rests solely with the Principal or Deputy Principal. The most up-to-date uniform information is available on the school website at https://sjwms.org.uk/information/uniform/.
To support a smooth transition into secondary school, a year 6 Induction Day will take place on Thursday 2nd July 2026, giving pupils the chance to meet their form tutor, classmates and subject teachers, follow a normal timetable and become familiar with the school site. Pupils should arrive at 8:35am via the main pedestrian gate, where prefects will direct them to the rear playground and be collected from the same location at 2:50pm; parents are not permitted to drive onto site and should notify the school in writing of any alternative collection arrangements. Pupils should know their allocated house, wear primary school uniform (no jewellery), and bring a small labelled bag containing a pencil case, PE kit and trainers. A packed lunch is also required as the canteen will not be available. For any queries or safeguarding notifications, parents should contact the Lower School office or email the Lower School mailbox.
Your son will be issued with a Username and Password for Wisepay, used for all payments to school including catering.
During the summer break, we are offering a three-day sports course for our new entrants, the date of which will be confirmed at a later date. Each day will run from 10.00am to 3.00pm and will include a wide range of sports activities. The course provides an excellent opportunity for students to meet their future classmates, form new friendships, familiarise themselves with the school environment, meet members of the PE staff and, most importantly, enjoy playing sport. Our aim is to make the three days highly enjoyable while helping to make the transition to the new school year in September feel less daunting. The course is limited to 75 places, which will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, and costs £100.00 per student for all three days. Participants should wear either their new hooped school PE uniform or smart PE kit with trainers (football kits are not permitted) and bring a packed lunch and plenty of water; water taps and fountains will be available. The course will be based in the Pavilion. To sign up, once you have received your Wisepay details please log in to your son’s Wisepay account, select Clubs and Activities from the homepage and choose the sports course. Payment is non-refundable unless the course is cancelled, and parents must also complete the online consent form. Information regarding payment and concent forms will be sent out via email at a later date.
On the first Saturday of September 2026, we will be holding our annual Year 7 Rugby and Hockey Taster Morning, giving all new pupils the opportunity to experience two of the school’s premier sports. Open to all ability levels, the session will run from 9.00am to 11.30am and will include fun, educational activities designed to help pupils develop skills, get to know classmates from across the year group and meet members of the PE staff. Pupils should arrive in good time, wearing full school rugby kit (hooped socks, navy shorts, hooped shirt, boots and trainers depending on ground conditions); the wearing of a gum shield is strongly advised, although no contact rugby will take place. The session will be based at the Pavilion at the rear of the school, adjacent to the lower car park, and parents are warmly invited to stay and watch. Refreshments will be provided by the RMSA, offering a great opportunity for parents to meet one another. Please complete the consent form by 12th August to confirm attendance.
