This term, Year 3 has been on an incredible journey, exploring our central idea: How expeditions can promote transformation. We've delved into the fascinating world of exploration, with a particular focus on the icy continent of Antarctica.
Our adventure began by pinpointing the location of Antarctica on the globe and learning all about this unique and challenging environment. We discovered the extreme conditions that explorers face, from freezing temperatures and fierce winds to the vast, unforgiving landscapes. To bring this to life, the children used their descriptive writing skills to write about Antarctica. We then used the power of AI to generate images - the results were truly stunning!
A key part of our learning focused on the inspiring story of Ernest Shackleton and his expedition to Antarctica on the Endurance. We followed their incredible journey, examining the monumental challenges he and his crew faced when their ship became trapped and eventually crushed by ice. Through captivating pictures and videos, the children gained a real sense of the hardship and resilience displayed by Shackleton and his men. Their story powerfully illustrated how facing extreme adversity can lead to profound personal transformation.
Bringing our learning closer to home, Year 3 put on their expedition planning hats! They enthusiastically planned their own expedition to The Haven for swimming. This involved carefully considering the route, estimating how long it would take to get there, and deciding on all the essential items they would need to take with them for a successful and safe adventure. This practical application of their learning allowed them to connect the concepts of planning and preparation to a real-life experience.
It has been a term filled with discovery, empathy, and the development of important skills. Year 3 have truly embraced the spirit of exploration and have gained a deeper understanding of how expeditions, both grand and small, can lead to significant transformation!
You've probably heard about Artificial Intelligence, or AI – it's even the first thing you often see when you do a Google search. AI is when computers can do smart things like learn, solve problems, and make decisions, just like we do. It's becoming a really common tool in our everyday lives, and here at PEPA, we're exploring how it can make our learning even better!
How We're Using AI at PEPA:
Boosting Our Reading and Writing with Read&Write: One fantastic way we use AI at PEPA is through the Read&Write Google Chrome extension. This is like a super-helpful toolkit that lives in our web browser. It uses AI to help us with all sorts of reading and writing tasks. For example, it can read text aloud to us, which is great for understanding tricky words or just listening along. It also has smart spelling and grammar checkers that can help us spot and fix mistakes in our writing. Read&Write even has tools to help us understand new vocabulary and organise our thoughts when we're planning a piece of writing. It really helps everyone feel more confident and included.
Fun and Smart Learning Games: You might not even realise it, but many of the educational apps and games we use in school have AI built into them. These games are often designed to be really engaging, and the AI helps make them even better for our learning. For example, if you're playing a math game and you're getting the answers right, the AI might make the questions a little bit harder to challenge you. If you're finding something difficult, it might offer you helpful hints or go back to easier questions so you can build your understanding. This means the games can adapt to how well we're doing, keeping us interested and helping us learn without even feeling like we're working hard.
We're excited to continue exploring how AI can support our learning at PEPA and help us all reach our full potential. Keep an eye out for more ways we might be using these smart tools in our classrooms.
