Our Central Idea this Module is: "The impact of man-made disasters may have motivated change". Our first line of inquiry led us to explore significant man-made disaster, where we have been working hard as historians to learn all things 'Great Fire of London'!
The children have been fascinated learning and researching about the conditions of London in 1666 and understanding how the fire started, why it spread so quickly and how London has changed to make people and homes safer.
Year 1 and 2 Phonics Screening Check
The Phonics Screening Check is coming up at the start of Module 6 for children in Year 1 and those children in Year 2 who did not pass the check last year. The check consists of 40 words, some real and some alien for the children to decode and read. The children have been working hard in school to develop their phonics skills but will always benefit from additional support at home - please ensure your children are completing the weekly tasks Miss Smith is setting for the children. If your child has been invited to phonics breakfast club, please ensure they attend as this will really accelerate their phonics progress ahead of the check to allow them to be successful. Further information about the check can be found here:

Importance of Reading and Reading Rewards
Reading is a fundamental skill that opens up a world of knowledge and imagination for children. It not only boosts literacy skills, but it also enhances creativity, critical thinking, and empathy. To foster a love for reading, we have instituted a fun reading rewards system throughout our school.
Every Thursday, it's important for children to hand in their reading records, which will be checked and signed by their class teacher. These records help track their reading journey and encourage them to engage with books more regularly.
To celebrate their hard work and dedication, we have a 'Reader of the Week' award. Each week, one child per class will be acknowledged for their commitment to home reading. The winner will receive a special certificate and a token that can be used in our exciting reading book vending machine. Here, they will get the chance to choose a book to take home and keep—a fantastic way to add to their personal library!
Encouraging consistent reading habits not only makes learning enjoyable but also sets the foundation for lifelong readers. Let’s keep the momentum going, and happy reading!
