We have been learning all about our community. This has meant exploring our school community, our role within it and the people who help us. We have interviewed members of our school community, including Mrs Rimmer and Mrs Champ asking them questions about their roles within the school.
In Maths, we have developed fantastic skills around one more and one less and the composition of number, exploring these concepts in a variety of concrete and abstract ways. We are continuing to develop our phonics knowledge, continuing to improve our reading and writing skills.
PE update
This term Nursery have been busy learning some new skills during their PE lesson, the children engaged in activities designed to enhance their understanding of gymnastics. They learnt what defines a champion gymnast, including their grace, balance, and control.
Additionally, they have focused on moving quietly throughout the space, an essential skill that allows gymnasts to perform with elegance. By practising moving with toes and fingers pointed, the children developed their spatial awareness and body control. This exercise not only fosters their physical capabilities but also encourages the discipline and focus required in gymnastics.
This term in Physical Education, our Reception children have been focusing on gymnastics, particularly on moving around the room. They have been exploring various ways to move their bodies in different directions while ensuring that their toes and fingers are pointed. We have emphasised the importance of body control and spatial awareness. The children engaged with the apparatus by practising movement techniques such as going over, under, through, around, on, and along. The children have shown their enthusiasm and development in these fundamental skills.
Year 1 and Year 2 students have been busy during their PE focusing on throwing skills. They have been practising both underarm and overarm throws, which are essential foundations for various sports. Emphasising accuracy has been a key component of their sessions, as being ready to catch when a partner throws is crucial for successful collaboration and safety. We have also discussed the consequences of inaccurate throws, highlighting how it can affect our teamwork.
Both Year 3 and Year 6 have been lucky to receive weekly coaching sessions from a cricket specialist, continuing until the end of the term. In these sessions, students have been learning essential cricket skills, including how to hold the bat correctly, throwing techniques, and the fundamental rules of the game. Beyond the technical aspects, their focus has also been on promoting teamwork and perseverance, which are vital components of any sporting activity.
Each week year 4 have had the privilege of receiving sessions from local troops, during which they have explored a variety of skills. Despite the weather, the children have enthusiastically participated in drills, demonstrating commendable spirit. They have engaged in numerous teamwork activities that have fostered collaboration among classmates. They have completed their ‘Courage, Resilience, and Discipline’ week and their coming weeks are planned to foster even more skills.
In our recent PE lessons, Year 5 students have engaged in an exciting introduction to badminton. We have learnt how to successfully hold a racket and explored a variety of hitting techniques, allowing students to enhance their skills. Furthermore, we have practised throwing the shuttlecock to our partners, fostering teamwork and communication. Importantly, we have also discussed positioning on the badminton court, and understanding why specific placements are crucial for effective play. The children's enthusiasm and progress during these sessions have been commendable.
At PEPA, art and design technology offer our children a fantastic platform to explore their creative potential. It's been wonderful to witness the pupils wholeheartedly diving into their creative imaginations, inspired by various artists and artistic styles.
Year 5 have been particularly engaged, designing innovative weather stations that not only showcase their creativity but also their understanding of science. Meanwhile, our Year 2 students have been layering using different paints and learning about the talented Flora Bowley, immersing themselves in her vibrant approach to painting. It's a joy to see their skills flourish!
Our PEPA Tots have also been busy, expressing themselves by drawing their favourite playthings—what a delightful sight! Lastly, Year 6 have been examining and responding to poignant WW1 artwork, allowing them to connect history with their own artistic expression. Overall, it’s been a splendid term filled with vibrant creativity across the school!
