This week in Year 4, we've had an exciting time expanding our knowledge and diving deeper into our investigations across subjects. Here is a snapshot of what we've been up to:
In Science, our exploration of teeth continued as we examined the different functions of various tooth types, by identifying how they help us chew different foods. We also discussed the importance of oral hygiene, sharing tips on how to care for our teeth, avoiding tooth decay. Building on the theme of food, our DT lesson focussed on how to prepare food and keep the kitchen safe and hygienic, by exploring practices such as washing hands and ingredients thoroughly and cleaning surfaces.
In English, we have been inspired by Madame Pamplemousse, to begin drafting our narrative stories. The children practiced using speech and first-person writing to bring their characters and plots to life. We eagerly look forward to seeing their creativity shine through in the final drafts! Our History lessons highlighted the incredible achievements of Marie Curie. The children created fact files detailing her pioneering word and discussed why she remains a significant figure in history - what an inspiring role model!
In RE, we continued learning about Buddhism, focussing on the key features of Buddhist temples and their importance for practicing meditation and teachings. The children were captivated by the serene atmosphere and symbolism of these sacred spaces.
As the festive season draws nearer, the excitement is building in Year 4 (with a little help from Elf!). We're looking forward to celebrating this magical time together in the coming weeks.
Year 5 Trip to the Cathedral
What a great time the Year 5 children had during their trip to the cathedral! The cathedral promised a memorable experience for the children, combining culture, music, and the festive spirit of the season, and they really did provide this service!
A highlight of our day will undoubtedly be the talented Vinnie, who graced us with his violin performance. Vinnie has been practising diligently, and we all eagerly watched his contribution, which added a magical touch to our visit. His talent is bound to inspire the children and enhance our appreciation of the arts.
During our time at the cathedral, we all participated in a singing practice with students from other schools. This collaborative effort not only encouraged teamwork but also fostered a sense of community as we harmonised together in such a beautiful setting. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the children to connect with their peers and share in the joys of music.
In keeping with the spirit of Christmas, we encourage all the children to read festive tales and stories in the lead-up to our Christmas celebrations! This not only enhances their literacy skills but also immerses them in the themes of goodwill and joy that characterise this season.
SEND Update:
Since the start of the academic year, our staff team has been working diligently to ensure that our provisions are in place to support all of our children, especially those with additional learning needs.
We would like to share some very encouraging feedback gathered from the questionnaire distributed to parents and carers of pupils with SEND at the beginning of Module 2. It is heartening to note that parents and carers feel:
able to approach staff regarding any concerns they may have about their child, and that these concerns are followed up appropriately.
opportunities have been provided for discussions surrounding each child’s School Support Plan with the SENCO.
that the adults who work with their children are well aware of the children’s needs and how best to support them.
confident that their children are making progress.
Overall, our SEND provision has received an average rating of 4 out of 5 stars from our parents and carers, which reflects our efforts in fostering an inclusive environment for SEND students. We are delighted that our families feel involved in the processes surrounding SEND.
In addition, many parents have expressed their appreciation for the involvement of external professionals who have been instrumental in diagnosing additional needs and providing targeted support for our children. We are currently collaborating with several specialist services, including Private Occupational Therapy (OT), Private Speech and Language Therapy (SALT), the Medway SALT team, Medway Community Healthcare School Nursing team, Educational Psychology (EP), and FORTIS Trust.
I am also pleased to inform you that trust in the leadership of SEND within our academy has been growing. From January, there will be a change in leadership roles: Mrs Champ will transition from her role as SENCO to return to her Vice Principal responsibilities, while continuing to serve as Inclusion Lead. Miss Hartung will take over the SENCO role and will work closely with Mrs Champ to ensure a seamless handover. Miss Edwards will remain as our SEND Admin Assistant, providing vital support to both Miss Hartung and Mrs Champ in liaising with families.
As we move forward, we aim to maintain the high standards of our SEND provision, ensuring every child receives the support they deserve. I encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts and feedback with us, as your insights are invaluable to improve and adapt our practices.
