We have had an excellent first two weeks back! We have started our unit of inquiry by exploring developments in humans and their achievements in the past.
Through our transdisciplinary learning, we have explored Greece as a country and labelled its key features on a map. Following on from this, we have been able to identify how Greece has changed over time by comparing a map of Ancient Greece and modern day. Our class text 'Who Let the Gods Out' has been a hit so far this term, enhancing the children's imagination as we build on our writing techniques to write our own fantasy narratives.
In Art, we have started to look at olympic vases, and have been able to identify the different olympic sports represented by the artwork. We have enjoyed our learning so far this term and we are looking forward to enhancing our learning further throughout the rest of the term.
Ian Rose Class
It has been a great start for Ian Rose class, we have completed a range of transdisciplinary and disciplinary learning through subjects RE, science, PE, Spanish, and Geography.
During our science learning this week we learnt all about human ageing and what it might look like. As a class, we discussed what the elderly could do to continue being independent as well as what they could do to stay healthy. This learning has linked with our central idea 'that being human can mean going through changes and developments'.
The highlight of our week has been looking at Google Earth and being able to explore Greece. The children were amazed by how much they could see through Google Earth which led nicely into our learning as we then explored a map of Greece and identified key features.
Years 1, 2 and 3 went to Haven!
This Thursday, Years 1, 2 and 3 had the incredible opportunity to visit the Haven Holiday park as a reward for completing their Haven Heroes challenges last year! Year 1 and 2 thoroughly enjoyed their time on the play equipment. Afterwards, they met the Haven character Jess and danced in front of the open air screen with her. We departed, feeling tired, after a few photos with Jess. Year 3 were lucky enough to be able to use the arcade games for free! They had such a brilliant time on the Dance Mat, Jurassic Park game and the game where the children got to win lots of superhero cards! We have even got some up and coming racing drivers on our hands by the looks of how they raced on the driving games! Take a look at the photos to see more!

International Literacy Day
This week, in our international events assembly, the children learnt all about International Literacy Day!
International Literacy Day was started in 1966 by UNESCO with the aim of highlighting the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies around the world. Since 1967, the annual celebrations of International Literacy Day have taken place on 8th September around the world to remind policy-makers, practitioners, and the public of the critical importance of literacy for creating a more literate, peaceful, and sustainable society.
Literacy is a fundamental human right for all. It opens the door to the enjoyment of other human rights, greater freedoms, and global citizenship. In 2022, however, at least one out of seven adults aged 15 and above lacked basic literacy skills. Additionally, millions of children are struggling to acquire minimum levels of proficiency in reading, writing and numeracy, while some 250 million children of 6-18 years old are out of school.
At Peninsula East, we make literacy skills a priority for all of our children to ensure they are able to communicate and express themselves appropriately. We do this by developing children's language capabilities, supporting our learners to become fluent readers, teaching reading and writing through supportive and modelled practices and identify students from an early age who are struggling with their literacy and put in supportive interventions to help them make consistent progress throughout primary school.
SEND at PEPA
It has been a busy start to the module for us at Peninsula East Primary Academy in terms of communicating with our parents and carers about our pupils on the SEND register. We have sent home the children's School Support Plans, and Mrs Champ is busy meeting with all parents and carers of pupils on the SEND register to discuss what support is in place, and any next steps with professional involvement over the coming year.
Within classes, teachers and TAs are keen to support pupils, and will be completing Speech and Language screeners over the coming weeks to better understand particular children's needs.
We support a range of pupils here at PEPA, and would like to signpost parents and carers to our SEND Support Process at PEPA. If you have any queries about SEND, we would encourage you to discuss these with your child's class teacher or our SENCO. Appointments can be made via the Academy Office. If you have any feedback to give, we would welcome this in writing to the academy office email address at: office@pepa.org.uk.
