What a fascinating and engaging term we've had in Year 3 as we've delved into our module on "Overcoming Disaster Supports Humans to Be Resilient"! We've been truly inspired by how people demonstrate strength and adaptability in the face of challenging events.
Our central idea, "Overcoming disaster supports humans to be resilient," has guided our learning, and the children have approached each topic with enthusiasm and curiosity.
Exploring Historically Significant Disasters:
Our first line of inquiry led us on an exciting journey into the world of volcanoes! We've become budding geologists, learning all about how volcanoes are formed within the Earth's layers. We can now confidently identify the three main types of volcanoes and understand the significance of the "Ring of Fire" and some of the world's most famous volcanoes.
A major focus of this inquiry has been the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. We've explored the historical context of this catastrophic event and discussed why it had such a devastating impact on the surrounding communities. The children have shown great empathy and understanding when learning about the people of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Expressing Disaster Through Media:
Our second line of inquiry has allowed us to explore the theme of disaster through a creative lens. We've been captivated by Andy Warhol's interpretation of Vesuvius, which has served as a fantastic source of inspiration for our own artistic endeavours. Using Warhol's style as a springboard, the children have been busy creating their own stunning art pieces depicting the powerful volcano. We've also been extending our knowledge of the colour wheel, experimenting with mixing colours to achieve the perfect shades for our final masterpieces.
Get ready for some explosive fun in the coming weeks! We're incredibly excited to be creating our very own paper mache volcanoes which we will then experimentally erupt!
Beyond Our Module:
Year 3 have also been making fantastic progress in other areas! Our swimming lessons have been a huge success, and it's been wonderful to see how much confidence each child has gained in the water.
In Maths, we've been busy exploring the concepts of telling the time and working out how long something will last and what the end times will be. When exploring money, we have secured our knowledge on coins and notes and have become confident in working out the total amount as well as finding the change. In Spanish we have been learning food and drink vocabulary and have been practicing ordering food and drink, role playing as customers and waitresses/waiters! We have also been deepening our understanding of safe relationships, how to be a good friend and what we can do to strengthen our relationships!
It has certainly been a busy term and we are looking forward to the summer!
We are pleased to share an update on the exciting science curriculum our students have been exploring across all year groups during Module 6. This period has involved hands-on activities, experiments, and discussions to deepen their understanding of scientific principles and foster curiosity. Students have been actively engaged in various areas of scientific study, building essential skills and knowledge.
Year 1 students have been learning about plants. They went on a plant hunt around the school grounds then planted sunflower seeds to observe growth and understand basic plant needs like sunlight, water, and soil.
Year 2 focused on animal habitats, considered what conditions might challenge an animal to survive in the wild. We then reviewed animals in captivity and had wonderful discussions about animal welfare and the environments animals require.
This week, they have been painting volcanoes to support their previous learning about rocks. Next week, Next week, year 3 will be making their own paper mache volcanoes! These activities demonstrate transdisciplinary learning beautifuly and will help them understand the geological structure of volcanoes laying, as well as chemical reactions for eruptions.
In Year 4, students explored states of matter, learning about solids, liquids, and gases, and how substances change between these states.
Year 5 investigated forces, including gravity, friction, and magnetism. They conducted experiments to see how forces affect motion.
Year 6 students studied living things and their habitats. This module covered biodiversity, ecosystems, and how organisms interact with their environment. This work demonstrates a fact file about the Swedish Biologist, Carl Linnaeus.

KENT POLICE INFORMATION FOR PARENTS/CARERS
As the summer holiday approaches, Kent Police would be grateful for your assistance in notifying
parents of a current concern over children using catapults, possibly in response to social
media. There has been an increase in the number of reports received relating to animals and
wildlife being targeted, injured or damaged by objects fired from catapults.
While carrying a catapult is not a criminal offence, its use may lead to criminal liability depending on
the circumstances, for example under:
• Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (intentionally killing or injuring any wild
bird);
• Section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 (causing an animal to suffer);
• Section 1 of the Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996 (causing unnecessary suffering to any
wild mammal);
• Section 1 of the Prevention of Crime Act 1953 (unlawfully having any offensive weapon in a
public place, meaning any article made or adapted for use for causing injury to a person, or
intended to do so); and
• Section 1 of the Criminal Damage Act 1971 (intentionally or recklessly damaging property)
Kent Police would like the following advice to be passed on to parents.
1. Dissuade your children from leaving home with a catapult.
2. Explain to your children that using a catapult to cause damage or harm is a criminal offence.
3. If you wish to dispose of a catapult, contact your local beat officer who will be able to assist
(details can be found at www.kent.police.uk).
We are grateful for your assistance in this matter.
Kind regards,
Kent Police
