This week, Julia Donaldson Class have started looking at our new central idea of 'Monarchies may shape our society'. We have began looking at what a Monarch is and how we research about the past. We have also looked at our new book 'The Cat and the King', where the children have been extremely engaged in discussions around the book, making predictions and exploring new vocabulary. They have also been exploring the world and identifying the UK on atlas', maps and globes. On Wednesday, we also had an exciting day looking at Careers! The children had the incredible opportunity to have a talk from an author and the police! They especially loved going in the police car and turning on the sirens!

This week, Year 5 have started to look at our new central idea ' Organisations were created to respond to a need.' We have made links with Science, and how technology has advanced over time in regards to space travel. This week, we have started looking at and comparing the geographical features of the moon and Earth as well as exploring the key historical events of space exploration. We have also started to read our new class text 'Cosmic', which is about an ordinary twelve year old boy and his quest to be the first child to go to space!
Medway PE Competition
Year 3 and year 4 had a great time at the multi-skills event on Thursday 22nd February. The children engaged in a range of activities and built on their fundamental teamworking skills. The children were one of eight schools and were pleased with their performance as they had fantastic sporting enthusiasm as well as great team spirit.
Thank you to the parents who supported us with picking up and dropping off the children at the event.
Smoothwall reminder
We are working in partnership with Smoothwall to ensure that all school accounts and devices whether inside or outside of school are appropriately monitored. Smoothwall is a real-time, digital monitoring solution that flags incidents as they happen. Monitoring both keystrokes and screen views, safeguarding staff are informed, through a variety of means, when users try to view or type any content that could be harmful.
This is a safeguarding led remote monitoring arrangement aimed at protecting all users from risks of online bullying, and pupils who may be at risk of wellbeing or safeguarding concerns. Data from student accounts is never seen in its entirety but identified risk words and phrases are reviewed and risk assessed by Smoothwall and will be passed onto the school safeguarding team if they meet set thresholds of concern or risk. This is an important strengthening of our safeguarding arrangements to protect our users as we increasingly operate in electronic forums as part of our wider digital strategy.
The safeguarding team will review the content of the monitoring and will liaise with the relevant staff. They will consider if there is a need to further educate pupils, undertake individual discussions, set sanctions or provide any further support that is required. If appropriate parents/carers will be contacted to ensure we are working together to support our pupils.
PEPA Careers Fair 2024
This week we held a 'Careers Day' for children where we had lots of visitors come into school to speak to the children about their jobs. We had Kent Police who came and did some informative talks in the classrooms (and even took the children outside to see the police cars) and an author, Karen Greaves-Neal, who came to do a workshop all about her brilliant books. In the afternoon, we had an exciting Careers Fair for Key Stage 2 children! The children had a fantastic time being able to work around the hall whilst each company, organisation and representative had a stall showcasing their jobs and roles within a vast range of job sectors. We were also very fortunate to have local businesses in, so that the children could also develop an understanding of the local economy and the needs of our community.
We would like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude to all of the companies and individuals that gave up their time to support with this, it was a fantastic experience for all children involved and will no doubt support their understanding of career paths and vocations as they progress through our school but also in their next stage of education.
We would like to thank...

Year 5 Science Workshop
Year 5 were able to take part in an interesting planets workshop this week to kick off our unit of inquiry. We virtually met with Dr Amy Edgington who taught us all about the planets in our solar system. We were provided with 3D glasses and images of Mars to explore. This was such a fun and interesting workshop and the children thoroughly enjoyed it!
Information
Wellbeing Group
We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity, on behalf of Medway Council and working in partnership with Homestart Medway, for your setting’s parents/carers and children to join a family group with their 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 year old child.
These sessions run for 4 weeks and will be delivered along with HomeStart Medway.
The sessions are aimed at supporting parents/carers who are finding parenting challenging, parents/carers expressing concerns about attachment and bonding with their child, parents/carers who are anxious about ‘getting parenting right’ and parents/carers concerned about their child’s anxiety or wellbeing.
This pathway has the benefit of combining enhanced parental/carer wellbeing through the use of simple mindfulness strategies with an improved understanding of the value of quality time with spent their child.
The sessions provide parents/carers an opportunity to play with their child, using recipes to make things like bubble mixture, playdough and healthy fruit smoothies.
Families will join us to explore a range of fun activities and experiences. After the session each week they will be sent 2 different short video recordings: one that explores children’s play and development - why children do what they do and how it helps them to learn and one that provides parents/carers with strategies around their own mindfulness and well-being.
We have created a short video below which can be shared with parents, via your own social media and provides a little information about the sessions, it can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/rttPZfC4D4g
We have also attached a poster that can be displayed in your setting, along with a leaflet which includes further information and contact details for anyone that is interested in joining the sessions.
Our next sessions are at Lordswood Children’s Centre Lordswood Lane, Chatham ME5 8NN
