Milestone Academy Newsletter

May 2023 - Term 5

Principal's Welcome

Dear Parents and Carers

This has been an incredibly busy Term at Milestone. The King's Coronation added an exciting and memorable event to our diary and Phase's celebrated in their own ways over the course of the last two weeks. Phase 3 saw a record breaking number of visitors come to join in the Coronation Street Party with over 70 Parents and Carers coming along. The afternoon was a huge success, as were all the events that took place in the other Phase's.

In our Parent Survey some of you commented that you could not get to our school events as you have work commitments.  We have listened to this and moving forward we have scheduled some activities to take place after school as well as during the day.  Some parents have commented that they did not know what to expect when invited in and this has discouraged them from attending. When you are invited to share in your child's learning all you have to do is turn up and be with your young person.  You will meet other parents and adults and have the opportunity to see your child in a different environment and perhaps doing things you did not realise they could do.  We learn so much when our families come in and join us which helps us to stretch and challenge our pupils so that they make the best progress.  By coming into events families have connected and new friendships have been made, securing support networks that many really value. For these reasons I really do encourage you to join an event where possible.  Below is a reminder of the dates coming up for the Summer Term/Term 6 (all of the dates for the events are also on our website):

Sarah Goosani - Principal

Phase 1

Phase One has had a busy term learning through our celebrations, our immersion day and we are beginning to invite our parents in for our ‘Share and Learn’.  Flamingo and Penguin parents came to join in with our learning and enjoy a snack time with their children.  During next term all other classes will be inviting their parents in to enjoy a similar experience and we are all looking forward to these events.

Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones have had lots of fun exploring our topic ‘Food, Glorious Food’. It has been lovely to welcome some new children to our setting and everyone has settled in well to the new environment. We have been reading and exploring the stories ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ and ‘Don’t put your fingers in the jelly Nelly!’.

We have tasted lots of different foods as well as explored different textured foods using all our senses. We also did some mark making and printing with different fruit and vegetables.

To celebrate the coronation of the King we decorated crowns and had a coronation picnic.

Koala Class

Koala Class have had a very exciting Term with our IB Theme ‘Food, Glorious Food.’ We began with the story ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and used oats to support Maths skills such as scooping, filling, pouring, comparing and weighing as well as making oaty playdoh for the children to investigate. In cooking, they made porridge and flapjack! Of course the children tasted their cooking - the porridge was not so popular but the flapjack was a big success! The children had a lot of fun celebrating the coronation of King Charles III with different crafts, stories and a fantastic Immersion day with all of the Phase 1 classes. It got very messy with cake, jelly, ice cream and glitter but a fabulous time was had by all of our Koalas. For cooking, they made cucumber sandwiches and showed us how amazing they were with spreading the margarine. Our term has finished with the story ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ which the children (and adults) have really enjoyed. This has been great for the children to explore different foods and colours.

We hope you all have a very happy and enjoyable half term.

Penguin Class

Penguin class had another busy term! Focusing on our IB topic ‘Food Glorious Food’, we have been learning to explore the world around us and try some different foods. Students have enjoyed stories relating to food such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Oliver’s Vegetables, both offering great opportunities to try a range of fruits and vegetables. Cooking lessons have been particularly popular with the students making smoothies, soups and fruit caterpillars! We have also visited the school garden to see what is growing in the raised beds and polytunnels, exploring where food comes from just like Oliver in our story! There have also been some fantastic celebrations this term, including our topic immersion afternoon where all the students enjoyed food based activities with the rest of Phase 1 as well as the celebration of the King’s Coronation!

Bear Class

Bear Class have had a wonderful term and have made wonderful progress exploring a range of new foods, environments and embedding skills that are linked to functional learning tasks. This Term for Science, Bear's have loved exploring animals/food through play activities that have allowed them to make direct links, such as milking a cow and exploring foods that cows produce. We have also really enjoyed our new PE sessions with our coach in the gym, exploring new pieces of equipment, following simple instructions and turn taking in small groups. We have been risk takers, exploring new environments such as the local park and have been open minded, de weeding and planting new herbs and flowers in our sensory garden. Towards the end of this term, we will be growing flowers and beans to take home to flourish over the half term.

Have a wonderful break before our final term. We will see you all in Term 6!

Flamingo Class

Flamingo class has enjoyed exploring our theme of food glorious food. We have looked at where our food comes from by having a farmyard tuff tray and identifying different animals. We made some wartime recipes to show how food and the way we create our meals has changed since the war. We celebrated the coronation by designing our own bunting and gold state coaches for our phase celebration and continued this theme the following week by making coronation collages.

The physio team arranged for some trikes to be in school for the day and a lot of our students had the opportunity to try them out,

Leopard Class

Leopard Class has had a fantastic Term 5. We have enjoyed our IB topic ‘Food Glorious Food’ encouraging us to explore the influences food and farming has on the way people live. We took part in a trip to Kent Life Farm, exploring a kitchen garden workshop as well as visiting the animals, recognising how to keep ourselves safe when caring for the animals. In PSPD we have continued to develop our independence and self help skills around the school and in the community, we have focused on how to act appropriately and build positive relationships. In Maths this term we have continued with our number bonds, addition and subtraction as well as introducing time. We have made great progress in our Read Write Inc sessions and have introduced digraphs, we have also focused on how we can improve our writing skills and take ownership over our feedback by beginning to self mark our spellings. This term we have enjoyed a range of celebrations including the King's Coronation. We are making the most of the good weather and participating in a range of outdoor learning opportunities.

Lion Class

Lion class has been working hard on our individual targets and exploring our theme of “ Food Glorious Food”. We have had sensory exploration of farms and where our food comes from. Our class read “ The very hungry caterpillar “ and we all enjoyed counting the fruit and food that the caterpillar ate.

Tiger Class

It has been a very busy Term in Tiger class filled with lots of excitement and exploration. We have been learning about the topic ‘Food, Glorious Food!’, which has seen the children engaged with high levels of enthusiasm and interaction! Tiger class have enjoyed learning about healthy versus unhealthy through tasting different foods and exploring a range of healthy recipes during our sensory cooking lessons. We had a whole phase coronation party and learnt about the coronation in class through a sensory story and made our own collages for the King. We are finishing the Term with a focus on pattern in art; we will be exploring this through mark making with fruit and vegetables, using different media to make different marks and linking our learning to our RE, focusing on Hindu patterns. We have also enjoyed exploring our local area more now that the weather is nicer and we look forward to expanding on our learning more next Term! Have a wonderful half term.

Giraffe Class

This Term Giraffe class has been learning where food comes from. We have been looking at photos and watched videos of farms to see where fruits and vegetables grow. The children have explored the crops in the garden area and have planted their own beans. We have also seen where milk comes from and looked at different packaging. They have all really enjoyed trying different fruits and vegetables during our cooking lessons.

Claire Woolmer - Phase 1 Director

Phase 2

Canyon Class

Canyon class had a fantastic Term exploring the topic ‘Field to Fork’. We have been engrossed in gardening each week- planting our own peas, flower pressing and making bug hotels for the school grounds. We have cooked some delicious recipes including trifle, cheesecake and to fit in with our King Charles celebrations we also made some Coronation chicken. We made crowns and flags and had a St Georges Day parade around school followed by our Coronation inquiry day in which the students loved and was a great success! We have been introduced to the new Complete PE programme which has been enjoyable for the students and a great way of developing gross motor physical skills. We have also been active and visited three different local parks this Term as well as Sainsbury's café for our community participation on Friday afternoons. Canyon class have taken a liking to our new ‘handypac train’ which has been a great way of building relationships in class and working closely with peers. As well as this, Canyons have been ploughing through their individual work sessions and engaging well with all topic work in sessions such as RE, Geography and Art.

Mountain Class

Mountain class had a fabulous Term exploring our topic ‘Field to Fork.’  We have learnt about different parts of flowers and foods that we grow and can eat.

Mountain class took part in a St George’s Day parade, both at school and locally, walking through Gravesend town centre.  We made our own flags at school, showing our work to our peers as we marched through the school. We also made crowns to celebrate the King’s coronation, decorating them with lots of jewels and glitter!  We have also made our own artwork to celebrate the Muslim festival of Eid.

Mountain class have also enjoyed the spring weather by taking walks into the village to buy a Friday treat at the Co op!

Orchard Class

Orchard class has had a great Term working hard and having fun throughout our field to fork topics. We have particularly enjoyed learning about where different foods come from in Geography and growing our own plants and food in Science and Horticulture. We had a wonderful tea party with Coast class to celebrate the Coronation and made our own crowns to pretend we could be Kings and Queens. We have made some Great British recipes in our cooking and nutrition lessons, including jam tarts, sausage rolls, sandwiches, and even sausage and mash. Orchard class has continued to access the school library weekly and we like sharing stories with our friends. We have become more confident in using the chromebooks to complete research and we have tried to make our own google docs and google slide presentations about plants too.

Forest Class

Forest class have thoroughly enjoyed learning about where food comes from this Term, through our topic ‘Field to Fork’. Our topic inquiry sessions have provided the students with the opportunity to explore and learn more about plants and what they need to grow, taking ownership of their learning by choosing what activities they want to engage with - harvesting and washing / preparing the potatoes was a popular choice! Forest class have been fortunate enough to attend swimming at Fairfield Leisure Centre this Term, where we have been building our confidence in the water, using a noodle to swim on our front and back! Forest class have continued to make fantastic progress in their Maths and English, particularly in their writing where we have completed a variety of activities focused on the farm. Fantastic work this Term Forest class!

Woodland class

Woodland class has enjoyed the topic of Field to Fork. They have engaged and responded well to our Sensory stories ‘Farmer Duck’ and ‘The Scarecrow Who Didn’t Scare’. The pupils have also been accessing horticulture sessions with Kirsty and they have used their senses to explore the memorial garden, they have planted peas which have just started to grow and they mixed paint and compost together to make some fantastic pieces of Artwork. In their Sensory cookery lessons they have been looking at Great British recipes and they have enjoyed using their senses to explore the ingredients required to make scones, strawberry fool and flapjacks.

Coast Class

Coast class has thoroughly enjoyed our Field to Fork topic. We have spent time in our memorial garden exploring the different senses. We have used gardening equipment and our Fine Motor skills to tend to the raised flower beds. We have explored the pond plants and have spotted goldfish. In class we have explored different Farm and Vegetable themed tuff trays to support our ILP targets. Our favourite session was ‘pigs in hot tubs’. Where we created a chocolate filled jam jar to hold our edible pigs. We then worked on our cognition and fine motor targets to explore an extremely messy and sticky chocolate ‘hot tub’. During our week of celebrations we shared an afternoon tea with Orchard class working on our social and communication skills. We also shared a fantastic Coronation event which we thoroughly enjoyed with our peers and parents. We have had an incredible time using adapted bikes and ventured around the school. Please log on to our website page to see the incredible activities we access each week.

Glacier Class

Through the transdisciplinary theme ‘How we organise ourselves’, we have been exploring and experiencing different foods, what they taste like, where they have come from and how they grow. We have planted beans, harvested and cleaned potatoes and sampled some traditional British recipes such as trifle, coronation chicken and shortbread. Since it has got a little bit warmer and the sun is beginning to show itself, Glacier have really been enjoying the daily mile, running or walking around the tennis courts to burn off some energy! We have also been working really hard on our functional communication and using chatty sheets and PECS to request motivating items.

Our learning has been guided by the transdisciplinary theme:

Central idea:

From Field to Fork

Our food travels and is made in different ways.

Lines of enquiry:

Why does food come from different places?

How are crops grown and harvested?

What role does food play within different religions?

How does my diet impact my health and wellbeing?

It is fast approaching the end of another academic year. We have started to plan for 2023/24 and you will soon get information regarding your child's transition. The Phase 2 and 3 teams are very happy to speak with you to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Nova Class

Exploring how ‘Our food travels and is made in lots of different ways’ has been the focus of this module. Students in Nova class have dissected plants into their different parts and have investigated what plants need in order to grow. We have looked at the different ways in which foods are grown, produced and harvested, and have explored sustainable farming and the food miles on imported products. We have looked at the ingredients which we have used in our Cookery lessons when making Great British recipes such as scones, jam tarts and finger sandwiches. Our Power of Reading book for this module was ‘The Robot and the Bluebird’ by David Lucus. We have looked at the relationship between the characters and how they were feeling throughout the story. In our Maths sessions, we have focussed on patterns and telling the time. We have been working on a DT project to make our own woollen dolls, complete with clothing. We have been practising our Crickets skills during this module for PE and have visited Dartford library as part of our community participation. We have finished the fourth book in a series by Louis Sacher, called ‘Sideways Stories from Wayside School’ which we have all enjoyed and have begun ‘The 13 Storey Treehouse’ series by Andy Griffiths.

Comet Class

This erm, Comet’s central idea has been ‘Our food travels and is made in lots of different ways.’ The students have enjoyed learning about the life cycle of a plant and dissecting a flower to identify the different parts and why they are important. Comet class have enjoyed their final 3 weeks of Forest School and have become a lot more confident in their own independence during these sessions. We have also started to learn how to play cricket during PE, the children have been working to improve their hand-eye coordination during these sessions.

The students have been learning to follow a range of recipes to make Great British Foods, including jam tarts, sausage rolls, sandwiches and scones. We used the scones and sandwiches we had made in our tea party to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III.

Moonbeam Class

Moonbeam class has been having great fun and enjoyed learning about our topic ‘Field to Fork’ this term. We have particularly enjoyed exploring where our food comes from and using this knowledge to understand and plan for healthy meals. We have been getting our bodies moving, developing our throwing, catching and batting skills to learn to play cricket. We have also loved getting out of the classroom and investigating the forest school area. Particularly climbing trees, making shelters and using the campfire to cook, building our confidence, independence and working together. We have been developing our computing skills, creating a powerpoint presentation about different types of plants, using our knowledge from other lessons to support us. Moonbeam class have been working hard creating their own ballerina dolls using wool in DT. We have been using our fine motor skills, threading and weaving the wool and adding hair and a dress. In English, we have been reading the story of ‘The Robot and the Bluebird’ and understanding the characters’, using our Zones of Regulations through role play and freeze frames to infer and share the characters thoughts and feelings. In our Maths sessions we have been recapping our knowledge of comparing numbers and sizes. We have also been exploring different weights focusing on heavy and light. We are currently building on our knowledge of number bonds and patterns.

Faye Mendez - Satellite Director

Phase 3

The Phase has worked extremely hard towards a common goal to prepare for the Milestone Coronation Street Party.  Our learning has all led to this event through the transdisciplinary theme:

Central Idea

The food on our plate impacts the environment

Lines of Inquiry:

Food on our plate comes from many different places.

Our food choices need to be produced responsibly

Aztec Class

Aztec class have learned about ‘Where food comes from?’ and they have located this on a World Map, looking at the different climates within these locations and the weather these produce for growing crops.  Our learning has definitely focused on the key concept of ‘connection’ as students then used their PSHE learning about which foods are in which food groups and how to have a healthy balanced diet.  Students can now make educated decisions of their food choices knowing what is healthy and what foods can be seen as treats.  These ‘treats as well as healthy snacks, have been added to the list of produce that all students in the phase have voted to have in the tuck shop (more information to follow).  Students have demonstrated a key learning attribute of ‘open mindedness’ as what types of foods and then the costs were discussed in a mature manner.  Aztec class has prepared advertising posters, shop signs, price lists all ready for the tuck shop to start soon…

In English, students have been studying ‘“e Next Best Junior Chef”. answering questions about what has been read and completing character profiles about each contestant.

In Maths, students have been extending number sequences and choosing the multiple these are either increasing or decreasing in.  They have been learning the time and looking at patterns within maths topics.  Lastly, Students have really enjoyed practising and baking scones for the Milestone Street Party, which was truly a successful event, fun for  students, families and staff.

Sparta Class

This Term, Sparta’s central theme has been "The food on our plate impacts the environment". We have been learning what continent and climate different foods grow in during our geography lessons. Students have broken down some of their favourite recipes to see which ingredients are needed, where they come from and what conditions they need to grow. One of the learning attributes we have been learning about this Term is how to be “balanced”. For this we have been looking at what different foods/drinks make up a balanced diet and how much we should be getting of each. We have also been learning how to keep our mental health balanced through practising different mindfulness techniques. In English we have been reading “The Next Best Junior Chef”. This book is all about 4 young contestants who enter into a TV competition to become “The Next Best Junior Chef”. Students have been discussing the personalities of each of the contestants and what the traits are for someone in a TV competition. In maths we have been looking at telling the time using an analogue clock in my group, and in Sam’s group they have also been learning about decimals. We prepared food for the coronation street party and students from Sparta class also performed by singing different songs to provide entertainment for the adults. This was a really great success and the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

Tudor Class

Tudor class really enjoyed the Transdisciplinary Theme about menus around the world and creating some lovely food linked to the countries during our cooking lessons.

We have also enjoyed our Coronation celebrations including our street party where many parents were invited. The Tudor class really enjoyed themselves. They helped make the decorations and cooked Chocolate Brownie cake, ate lemon drizzle sponge and had cheese and cucumber sandwiches.

Viking Class

This Term Viking class has been exploring our central idea ‘The food we eat has an impact on the environment’ where we have looked at where our favourite foods come from and how some of it has to travel from lots of different places around the world. We have had discussions about the welfare of the animals who produce our food as well as the different people who cultivate and harvest the different ingredients that go into our food. We have explored what food should be in a balanced and healthy diet and researched different celebration foods in preparation for our Coronation celebrations.

Some of the pupils in Viking class have had the opportunity to join a work placement at Bore Place, a working dairy farm where we have seen where milk is produced and how the animals are cared for. We have also begun planting seeds including sunflowers and potatoes, which will be grown and harvested later in the year. We have also tried grinding some wheat to make flour to make our own bread. Our Horticulture group have also been looking at

In English we have been reading the text “The Next Best Junior Chef” a book about how 4 children are navigating their way through a cooking competition, where we have explored how they might be feeling and described the different characters in the story. In maths we have been working on telling the time using both analogue and digital clocks, focusing on the language we use to tell someone the time. We have also been working on the use of decimals.

One of our biggest highlights has been preparing for and attending the Coronation street party on the playground where we demonstrated some amazing singing and rapping efforts from the pupils in Viking class and from around the Phase. We do hope everyone enjoyed the scones and cheese twists we made!

Saxon Class

Saxon Class have enjoyed exploring our transdisciplinary theme this Term and exploring different foods from around the world. Through our cooking lessons we have continued to work on developing fine motor & independent skills, as well as experiencing different smells, flavours and textures of foods which are different to our everyday favourites.

Students in Saxons have continued to develop their listening & attention skills in working on their daily individual learning plan targets and we have thoroughly enjoyed taking our learning outdoors as much as possible, now that the weather is getting warmer.

One of the key learner attributes which we have been working on this term is ‘risk-taker’. Saxon Class students have all been working on increasing their communication & interactions with each other through turn taking board games in class and fun games on the playground, such as ball games, chase games & taking turns on the swing. The students have been increasingly taking risks in trying out new activities and tasks which they may not have experienced before and myself & the class team are very proud of all the Saxons!

A huge highlight of this term has been the Phase Coronation Street Party; it was wonderful to see the whole phase come together as one and enjoy the festivities including party food made by each class and entertainment too. Saxon Class worked extremely hard to make some delicious mini Victoria Sponges and we were pleased they were enjoyed by so many people who were here to support Phase 3.

Roman Class

A short but a busy term for Roman Class.  We have welcomed two new members of our team - Martella and Jen - and they are now part of the Roman family.  Students have continued to work on their individual learning plans and we have seen great progress from everyone as well as lots of smiles to show us that everyone is happy.  We have spent a lot of time looking at books this term and using these to develop our learner attribute of “communication”.  We particularly like anything by Julia Donaldson and have been using her books to answer simple comprehension questions using symbols, talkers, and other methods of communication that we like to use.  We also love a sensory story and have enjoyed a special massage one for the Coronation. We continue to develop our personal care and love to look at ourselves as we clean our teeth, wash our faces and our hands.   We continue to be “risk takers” trying new things, exploring new places.

One of our students - Sonny - has been exploring his environment in Phase 3 more and visiting other classes.

Renaissance Class

Renaissance class had an exciting Term 5 with planning and preparation for our Coronation Street Party. This has linked well into our theme of "The food on our plate impacts the environment" where we were exploring where the food we eat and cooked for the party came from and mapping it around the world. We have discussed climates and ideal growing conditions for different plants and crops.

We love cooking in Renaissance class and have been enjoying reading “The Next Best Junior Chef” in English. This book is all about 4 young contestants who enter into a TV competition to become “The Next Best Junior Chef”. We have been discussing how the characters are feeling throughout the stress of the competition and what character traits they have to head for success.

The highlight of the term has to be the street party, for both staff and students;

we sang, danced and signed along to our favourite songs and ate some delicious food that the whole phase cooked. It was so special to spend the afternoon with families and our friends.

Jurassic Class

This Term has absolutely flown by and we have been all around the world, hypothetically speaking anyway.  Our central idea of ‘food connects people and communities' has taken us to different countries in order to think about the types of food produced or eaten in them.  Through our journeys we have explored famous landmarks of different countries and identified whether they are physical or human.  We’ve also been thinking about how we enjoy sharing meals and who we share food with.  We have been taking more risks with our food choices and really enjoyed creating our own meals. We made choices for things like our pizza toppings or the vegetables we used in stir fry recipes and where these foods come from.  Ultimately we enjoyed being a part of the phase street party and prepared 100 bowls of ploughman's salad!

Kyle Marsh - Phase 3 Director

As we move into the Summer Term, it is an ideal time to reflect on all our successes so far. I am very proud of the Phase 3 team who, with Maria’s leadership and our young people’s enthusiasm, have gone from strength to strength.

I want to thank the entire Phase 3 Team for making our Coronation Street Party a huge success, and I especially want to thank the family members who came to support our young people. It was a unique event, which was enjoyed by more than 200 people altogether. You will no doubt have noticed how hard all our classes worked to decorate, bake, cook, clean and get our environment ready (and the clean up afterward was a massive job!). A huge congratulations to all the students who were courageous enough to provide our afternoon’s entertainment!

At the time of writing, I am excited about this year’s Phase 3 Residential, “Crash Out on Cavalier,” which is taking place at Chatham Historic Dockyard. Like last year’s visit to Norfolk, this is another first for us, and I am proud that Phase 3 is always pushing barriers and trying new things so that our students get to experience as much of the world around them as possible.

I know that this time of year always brings its challenges and stresses, especially for students who are transitioning to a new class or new site. Some of our students will be attending our fabulous Milestone @ the Leigh provision, while other students will be moving on to Phase 4. It is natural and normal to be worried about times like these, but be reassured that we will do everything possible to make this transition as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Central Idea

Society and communities bring people together for different purposes.

Lines of Inquiry

The structure of British democracy and other global governments.

Sporting and arts events bring nations and communities together.

Charities and local services contribute to our communities.

 Anning class

In Term 5, we have started reading the book “The Accidental Prime Minister”. This is a fabulous book that tackles the decision making, pressure and importance of being the Prime Minister. In Maths, we became time experts! We learnt to tell time on an analog clock. The children worked so hard in lessons to take on this really tricky topic. Well done! We also learnt about charity and a volunteer speaker for WaterAid gave us an illustrated talk. The speaker talked about living without access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene - what this feels like and the consequences - and explained how WaterAid is helping to get clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene to everyone, everywhere. We found amazing the work that WaterAid does to help those that are in need and understood how lucky we feel to have access to clean, safe water and decent toilets. As part of Community Learning and Skills Development, our class went to a local church to discover how people use the building to worship and to help with the foodbank as part of the King's Coronation Big help out. We absolutely loved it! Finally, Anning took part in Coronation Celebrations to acknowledge the coronation of King Charles III. We had the opportunity to take part in different activities with our peers. We had lots of fun!

We cannot quite believe how quick this term has been. The children have really grown in confidence with their learning and have had a lot of fun.

Turing Class

In Term 5, Turing has been exploring how communities are brought together through various systems and for varying purposes. We have explored different types of government structures and students had the opportunity to deliver their own ‘State Opening of Parliament’ speeches if they ever became the monarch of their own country. A lot of these ideas revolved around the ways they would help to bring people together in positive ways and how they would eliminate some of the elements of society that they deemed unsupportive of people. Students also explored the similarities and differences in places of worship and discovered how many different religions are represented in our neighbourhoods. We also explored how sports and arts bring people together by exploring the history of the modern Olympic games and Eurovision. And of course, we have taken the opportunity to celebrate King Charles III’s coronation and Turing students developed their own version of Coronation-themed garden party games to help bring the M@L community together.

Equiano Class

Throughout Term 5 the Students have explored the society in which they live, through the British Political system and how it is structured, learning about our Government and the Monarchy. They have been a part of organising a Garden Party to celebrate the King's Coronation, focussing on the type of correspondence the Royal family would have made for such an event and also looking at other Global events that bring communities together.

They have also been exploring local charities and services that are a part of the local community, around New Ash Green and Dartford and how they can be involved within the community through the choices they make or activities they participate within.

For our class read, Equiano has started a new novel which is a reality fiction that takes place in a 22nd - century parallel universe. The story is told from two different perspectives - Callum and Sephy and their experiences of their entwined but very different lives and the  worlds in which they live. The class has enjoyed our story so far and we will continue to explore the story into Term 6. The series is made up of four books and a TV series on the BBC which the students can access if they wish to dive deeper in the thoughts of Malorie Blackman's adventure and action books.

Sofia Pinto- Satellite Director - Milestone @ The Leigh

On Thursday 18th May, M@L visited the Science Museum in London which showcases one of the world’s most extraordinary collections drawn from the fields of science, engineering, medicine and technology. This trip ignited our students' curiosity and provided an unforgettable experience. It was an exciting day of exploring beyond the classrooms!

Phase 4

It is hard to believe we are approaching the end of term 5 and what a wonderful term this has been. The term has allowed for a range of celebratory learning activities centred around the Coronation with a fantastic community event.

Students have been working hard to complete the final aspects of their accreditation profiles and where appropriate, prepare for examinations. We are all extremely proud of the achievements they have made and continue to make.

Next Term we will be piloting our very own business enterprise. This will create a range of new opportunities to generalise important skills. What this space for more information on our budding businesses!

As we move towards the final term of the year, we look forward to welcoming students who are joining next year for transition visits as well as preparing to say goodbye to our wonderful Year 14 students who will be moving onto the next Milestone in their journey to adulthood. We look forward to welcoming families to events to share information and celebrate the achievements of our final year students.

Dover Class

This Term, Dover class have been learning about their responsibilities for themselves, their community and the people around them. At the start of the Term, we had an exciting delivery of chick eggs in the classroom! We learnt about how chicks grow as we watched them hatch and learnt how to take good care of them by cleaning their incubator and feeding them every day. We really enjoyed seeing the chicks change as they got older and we used this as a chance to reflect on how we also change and grow older.

In ASDAN and PSHE, we have been learning about how to take care of ourselves by washing correctly and eating healthily. We’ve been exploring different healthy foods and sharing our preferences ready to make a healthy recipe of our choice at the end of Term.

We also enjoyed celebrating the King’s Coronation by baking British themed cupcakes for the phase Bake Off competition and joining in with the Phase activity afternoon.

In Maths, we’ve been working on our number skills, including finding different ways numbers can be represented, different ways to make the same number and comparing numbers to find which one is more.

Eynsford Class

Eynsford class have had a very busy Term. The students have been working together and respecting friendships as part of our ASDAN accreditation ‘Getting on with People’. Whilst exploring this module, students have also been exploring turn taking games during PE, and have been playing Boccia.

Eynsford class enjoyed celebrating and being part of the King's Coronation day celebrations, they took part in a  whole phase activity in the afternoon, and held their very own street party within class.

Eynsford class have been developing their Maths skills and looking at the Term ‘more’ within their cooking lessons and have also been identifying ingredients on their recipes as part of their English work .

Scotney Class

Scotney class have been working hard to complete their ASDAN accreditations in Reading and a Mini Enterprise project.

They have engaged well in our Independent Living Skills lessons where we have been practising a varied selection of household tasks including vacuuming, window cleaning, changing sheets, washing and washing up.

Celebrating the King’s Coronation was great fun as the whole Phase joined together to party and engage in fun activities together.

Canterbury Class

Canterbury class have been enjoying weekly trips out into the local community this term to visit the supermarket to buy  ingredients for their cooking lesson. The students all follow a visual shopping list to find the items in the shop. They then take it in turns to use the self checkouts. The students particularly enjoyed buying ingredients for our coronation bake off after having chosen what they would like to make collectively as a group.

We have also been learning about our local communities and our community in school during topic activities and students have enjoyed participating in a dress up sensory story about a community event.

Leeds Class

Leeds class thoroughly enjoyed our coronation celebrations which included a Phase bake off and a party! Leeds class worked together to make a beautiful Union Jack Victoria sponge, using a range of our skills including switch work, fine motor and cognition. In the afternoon everyone enjoyed the Phase party in the gym, there were lots of fun activities to take part in including crown making and biscuit decorating.

Upnor Class

Upnor class have had a fantastic Term 5 and the students have continued to work hard towards their accreditations in healthy living and health and safety in the community.

The students have enjoyed visiting Beams to continue to develop their life skills and they worked hard to produce a delicious roast dinner from scratch. The students visited Wilmington Market as we began our business enterprise this term and the students are excited to start making their bug hotels which we are hoping to sell at our upcoming school fete.

Hever Class

Hever class have continued to work really hard and have sat English and Maths exams.

The class have shown amazing team working skills in producing two meals, the first from a set of ingredients provided for them and the second that they discussed and planned themselves including visiting the local supermarket to purchase the items following a shopping list. The meal that they produced during their visit to BEAMS was very tasty.

It was lovely to see them all sitting around the table enjoying a meal that they were responsible for producing each stage of.

The class have also used the opportunity of visits to BEAMS the supermarket and local market to carry out travel training using the local bus service and roads within the area. They have practised reading the timetable, identifying the correct bus to board and paying for their ticket.

As well as the visit to the local market they have visited Hawley Garden centre to carry out research for the upcoming Business enterprise project that we look forward to sharing with you in the near future. During the local elections the class were given the opportunity to experience voting within the classroom to choose the name of the ‘pet’ dog and cat (not real). They were given a ballot sheet, cast their votes and chose the names Coco and Cookie.

Rochester Class

Rochester class have worked really hard this term and have completed exams in English Speaking and Listening as well as working hard on their accreditations. The students have enjoyed developing their understanding of Business Enterprise this term where students carried out some market research at the Wilmington Market. The students have come up with their own ideas of products we could make and sell where they have produced their own Business plan and pitched their ideas to the class.

Horticulture News

Phase 2 has completed a variety of outdoor activities including making flower pictures, insect hotels, bird & butterfly feeders.  They have also been busy planting various seeds.  Orchard class have taken responsibility for a raised bed and have planted strawberries, peas, carrots and beans.

Phase 3 has been busy in the garden.  Saxon class have helped with watering and weeding, as well as planting peas and carrots in class.  Renaissance have planted potatoes and sweet peas, and have helped to weed the sensory garden for the younger students.  They also want to provide more sensory activities in this area.

Vikings have also been busy planting different vegetables and have been maintaining current plants.  They supported in preparing the ground for the new raised beds.

Jurassic class have planted seeds into trays, made pea head people and are hopefully going to make a mini pond.

All of this has connected to the Phase 3 topic of ‘What’s on the menu?’  Students have also displayed learner attributes of being knowledgeable, risk takers and communicators as they’ve learnt new skills and worked together to complete tasks.

The 2 groups working towards their Level 1 accreditation have continued to work extremely hard.  We have been gathering our final pieces of evidence across the units we’ve been working on this year.  Lots of seeds have been sown both indoors & outside, seedlings have been transplanted & we’re hoping for a bumper crop in the next few months!

Finally for more news on the garden renovation, checkout the Horticulture page on the website.

Pupdate!

Toffee and Fudge are  both doing very well, although fudge has not been able to fully participate in full training recently due to her recent spay operation.

She was under instruction to rest, she didn’t listen very well to the vets and was constantly trying to charge around like normal, but Toffee was a very good brother and was very gentle and loving to her when she came home.  Before her operation they were enjoying exploring different places and meeting new ‘friends’, they weren’t sure about the ducks on the Bluewater nature trail though the ducks were teasing them! They are both working their way through the different commands they need to learn and are both able to follow the commands of sit, stay, lay down and wait.  Toffee is  doing particularly well with walking to heel, Fudge is getting there but she is very easily distracted and loves attention so will turn to anyone going past for it!

She is very intelligent and needs lots of stimulation and needs to burn off energy now that she has the ok to do so from the vet.

Online Safety

Vodafone have created a Digital Parenting Magazine for families. In this resource, Vodafone have put together articles and expert advice on a variety of online safety topics to help keep children safe in the digital world. The 10th edition can be found here: digital parenting magazine

Vodafone have also developed their digital parenting pro; an interactive resource which provides helpful information about what parental controls and safety settings are available across the most popular apps, games and devices. This is a useful resource that allows adults to take steps to keep children safer when accessing the internet and technology at home.

Alongside this, Vodafone have also created a “Digital family pledge”,

which is another interactive resource designed for families of children aged 5-13

years, to support parents/carers in starting a discussion and setting appropriate

Medical and Therapy Team News

Therapy News

Physio News, At the beginning of term the physios invited a Rep to bring adaptive trikes to school. There were 3 different sizes to try across the school and all the pupils who rode the trikes had a great time. The trikes are a fun, social activity which is great for cardiovascular fitness, promotes joint and bone development, increases range of movement and allows for strengthening of muscles. We are hoping to find funding to purchase trikes for school.

Signing Club:  Students in signing club have been singing and playing games to learn new signs and use the signs they already know in different ways.  We have played a naming game based on ‘I went to school’ and ‘Simon Says’.  This helped us to learn action word signs such as run, jump, walk, brush teeth, paint and more.  We all helped each other and had fun remembering our new signs.    Students who come to signing club are encouraged to suggest games or activities so please talk to your child and encourage them to let us know.

Book Review: The children's book 'Amazing Me, Amazing You' by Christine McGuiness is a lovely book to help young people understand what it's like having autism as a child. The book is illustrated with colourful pictures and goes through different situations such as playing outside, going to parties, making friends, getting dressed and how some of these things feel to children with autism.  A key message from the book, is despite finding some things difficult, we are all different and amazing in our own way.

Find a Voice, the communication charity will next be in school on 15th June at 11.15-12.30.  Check out their website for further information about this service, resources and lending library.  This event is open to families, staff and children.  https://www.findavoice.org.uk/outreach-services/

Medical News

The Community Paediatrician and Dietitian clinics have been held in school this term.  We remain committed to hosting specialist health clinics in school as we believe it is less stressful for children, works well for families and it promotes joint working with our health colleagues.  We hope this is your experience.

The Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust Special School Nursing Service has welcomed Eve and Sam to join the Milestone team of nurses. We also have Chloe, student nurse on placement with us.

Thank you to all families for supporting the return of all medication, especially the emergency medication following the Easter Break.  Children can not be in school without their emergency medication.

Please continue to send any medical updates including letters, reports or plans through the pupilhealthplans@milestoneacademyorg.uk.  This ensures we have accurate and up to date information in school.  We have to include specialist reports and plans in each child’s Individual Health Care Plan (IHCP).  If we do not have this information, we are unable to support those specific health needs in school.  IHCPs are reviewed and updated at least annually or sooner if needed.  If an IHCP is sent home to be signed, please return it to us as soon as possible.

Following a recent review, we have updated our ‘Supporting Pupils With Medical Conditions’ policy.  This is available on the school website.  We ask that families read this so you understand how we support children’s medical needs in school.

Thank you so much for all your support and working so closely with us.  If ever you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact a member of the therapy or medical team.

From Liz Skilton, on behalf of the Medical Team

Post-16 Home School Transport

A reminder that if your child is entering our Post-16 provision next year (ie they are starting Year 12), and you currently receive free home-school transport, you will need to re-apply for this service. This can be done online:

Free school transport - Kent County Council

Kent County Council will also ask you to consider whether independent travel training will be appropriate for your student. Asking this is a standard KCC policy, and all families are asked the same questions. We appreciate that for most - if not all - of our students this will not be practical but want to make you aware that KCC will explore this option with you, as per their 16+ Transport Policy
