Dear Parents
Welcome to the first newsletter of this academic year and what a term it has been! We have welcomed over 1500 prospective families to our Open Events over the last month. It has been an absolute delight to meet all these families and to have our student cohort tour them around the academy. The feedback we have had has been overwhelmingly positive and we are so proud of our incredible ambassadors.
"I wanted to take this time for whomever is able and appropriate to pass on our thanks to your Year 7 girls, Jessica, Poppi and Mia. They showed us and our twins around on Tuesday 3rd October and were brilliant ambassadors for your school - so funny, chatty, bright and informative. What struck us is how positive they were about the teachers and transition process."
Our pioneer co-ed Year 7 cohort have all settled in amazingly quickly and easily - it is as if we have always had female pupils here!
"Thank you for your support for the new students. We couldn’t have asked for a better support to secondary school."
We are also very proud of how the student community has embraced the new uniform and PE kit. That said, we've listened carefully to their feedback and have arranged with our uniform supplier to have a school V-neck jumper added to the list of optional uniform items (more details to follow).
Finally, we would like to wish you a restful half-term break and look forward to welcoming the students back recharged and refreshed on Monday 6 November.
A little bit of what we have been up to...
Spanish GCSE Trip to Barcelona
On Wednesday 10 October 45 students from Years 10 and 11 set off for the sunny city of Barcelona for three days, to increase their knowledge of Spanish culture as well as to give them the opportunity to practise the Spanish they are working so hard to learn.
We were very lucky to have beautiful 25 degree weather every day, which allowed us to explore the city to the max which we certainly did, covering on average 19km a day!
Some of our highlights were strolling down Las Ramblas, a wide boulevard full of street performers and souvenir stalls, getting an insight into Spanish architecture through exploring Pueblo Español, not to mention taking the cable car to Montjuic and taking in the panoramic views of the city. Students were also able to try Spanish cuisine with an evening of tapas (the paella was a particular hit) in addition to broadening their knowledge of art with visits to both the MNAC and the Picasso Museum, leading to some interesting discussions as to whether the students were more able artists than Picasso himself!
We hope that all students had a great time and that this trip has encouraged a love for the Spanish culture and language that will boost them throughout their Spanish GCSE and on into A Level.
Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside...
The Year 11 field trip to Seafood and Birling Gap was a success! What a beautiful day to spend at the South Coast.
Visit from Tom Tugendhat
It was brilliant to have Tom Tugendhat in school last week. He visited some of our classrooms and had a tour of the refurbished areas in school.
"It was great to see the transformation of the school and the attitude of the pupils. They were great to see and so engaged. Thank you to all the staff and students for showing me around".
T Level in Accounting
We are really excited to announce that from September 2024 we will be offering our new Year 12 students the T Level in Accounting.
This is a technical qualification designed to give students the specialist knowledge and skills required to work within the accounting and finance industry. It is an up-to-date qualification designed to enhance the students employability skills in a dynamic market.
One of the most exciting aspects of the course is that students need to complete 315 hours of industry hours (approx. 45 days ) over 2 years.
If there is anyone who feels they might be able to help us with this; for example if you work in accounting or finance, then we would be delighted to hear from you - marianne.brooks@latonbridge.org.uk
Extra Curricular Activities
Chelsea Training Sessions and Football Fixtures
Year 8 and 10 Chelsea Training sessions have been going brilliantly. Our school football teams have taken part in various fixtures since the start of the academic year, completing against local schools. We are proud of their team work and personal development.
Cheerleading
"Cheerleading routines typically range anywhere from one to three minutes, and contain components of tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers, and stunting."
Our brilliant Cheerleading coach, Lauren has been working with our Year 7 squad. Six weeks ago these pupils had never done cheerleading before, now look at them hitting their prep level stunts! Well done team - they have worked so hard this term and we are excited to see what they can achieve next term. Watch this space!

Enrichment
As many of you will know, we have an Enrichment period once a week, where pupils choose which subject they would like to participate in, each term. This term, Hama Beads were added to the list of Enrichment activities - the decision to add this, was a great one. Pupils have been enjoying getting creative in a different way and we look forward to seeing many more of their creations in the coming weeks.
