Celebrating Student Success in Modules 1 and 2
Dear Parents and Carers,
When Leigh Academy Minster first opened in September, we committed to providing our staff and students with an education that focused on our four values: Ambition, Achievement, Character, and Responsibility. This commitment was made because we believe that every one of our students is entitled to a high-quality education, both academically and personally. We are still at the early stages of our academy's journey, however, our students have been the embodiment of our Minster Way approach and are incredible ambassadors of the academy.
The articles in this newsletter demonstrate the incredible achievements of our students, and I am immensely proud of their contributions to the academy. Their hard work, dedication, and resilience in response to the challenges of the new academic year have truly shone through, resulting in some exceptional outcomes and experiences across all year groups.
These achievements are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, as well as the tireless efforts of our dedicated staff. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all teachers, support staff, and parents for their unwavering support and encouragement during these first two modules, something I am sure will remain throughout 2025.
We continue to be committed to providing our students with a high-quality, purposeful, and successful learning environment, and will challenge our students each day to ensure they reach their full potential. We will continue to strive for excellence in all that we do and celebrate the successes of our students at every opportunity.
I encourage you to join us in celebrating these fantastic achievements shown throughout this newsletter, and would ask that you take the time to praise and congratulate your child on their hard work and dedication so far this year.

Wright College
It is an absolute honour to be leading Wright College and it has been a pleasure to get to know the students within the college over the last two modules. Within the college, we have not only an amazing team of tutors but also an experienced and talented college team. Our Assistant Heads of College are Ms Blackman (Year 7 lead), Mr Brown (Year 8 and 9 lead) and Ms Bradd (Year 10 and 11 lead). Our Small School Managers, Miss Payne and Miss Newman, support our whole Wright College community. We are also supported by our Student Services Officer, Miss Russon. Finally, but integral to the smooth bridge between families and the college, we have Mrs Deacon, who is the Wright College administrator.
Over the past two modules students and staff, within Wright, have co-constructed our unique college ethos by suggesting the traits it takes to be a part of Wright College. The ideas were brilliant and as you can see spells the word INSPIRE. These traits set Wright college apart from others within the Academy and help build foundations for the rest of students' school life and beyond.
I have certainly been inspired by Wright College students since September who have made a wonderful start to the 2024-25 academic year. Year 7 students have settled exceptionally well into the life of the Academy; making friends and showing tremendous progress and achievement within their lessons. Meanwhile, Year 11 students have demonstrated incredible maturity and resilience when faced with the daunting task of the mock exams. Their resilience and strength of mind has been shown through their conduct. It was a pleasure meeting year 10 parents and carers during our recent parent and carer evening and to hear so many excellent pieces of feedback from staff and parents made me really proud.
We are so proud to have awarded the first ever Wilbur and Orville Wright Awards to students who have demonstrated the college ethos throughout both modules.
Year 7 - Logan W701
Year 8 - Michael W802
Year 9 - Izze W901
Year 10 - Jack W1002
Year 11 - Ruby W1102
Wright students have already achieved over 7000 positive points since September. Notable mentions have to go to the top two students in each year group with the most points. These are: -
Phoebe W701
Layla W701
Ted W801
Adam W801
Leo W902
Izze W901
Jack W1002
Lola W1002
Emily W1101
Paiton W1102
Attendance is vital for educational progress and in Wright College there are three tutor groups who are demonstrating their understanding of this and leading the way by all achieving over 92%.
A big shout out to: -
W702 - 96%
W902 - 95%
W701 - 93%
It's also worth celebrating that a third of Wright College have an attendance above 98% so far this year.
I would like to conclude by thanking you for the support and open communication throughout the massive transition into the new school. I firmly believe that working with families, in partnership, ensures children's academic and emotional development.
If you would like to contact Wright College then please do so by emailing wright@minster.latrust.org.uk.
We are excited to see how the same positive start to 2025 continues throughout the academic year ahead and on behalf of all Wright College we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Exciting Updates and a Look Toward the Future
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we approach the end of another productive module, we are delighted to share with you some updates, celebrate recent achievements, and outline our aspirations for the modules ahead. Your continued support and involvement play a pivotal role in the success of our community, and we are immensely grateful for your partnership.
Fostering a Strong College Culture
One of our key priorities is fostering a strong and inclusive college culture that instills a sense of belonging while empowering our students to develop their unique identities within our academy. We are proud to share below the Johnson College ethos, inspired by the remarkable achievements and characteristics of our college’s namesake, Amy Johnson. Her legacy serves as a guiding light in shaping the values and aspirations we uphold.
We firmly believe that “everything is possible” for our students, and we work each day to instill this vision in their hearts and minds. This guiding principle is reinforced by our core value of being pioneers, along with its associated subvalues, all of which work together to shape well-rounded young individuals capable of achieving their goals.
We encourage you to incorporate our college ethos into conversations with your child(ren), helping to embed these values and support their growth as confident, capable individuals ready to reach their full potential.
Celebrating Achievements: Rewards and Recognition
We take immense pride in celebrating the hard work and achievements of our students. Johnson College students have earned an impressive total of over 8,000 merit points so far this academic year—the highest in the academy. This reflects our belief that our students consistently demonstrate the IB Learner Profile attributes both in and out of the classroom. A special congratulations to 7J01 and 7J02 for each surpassing 1,200 merit points, and to 8J01 for earning the highest total of 1,269 merit points. Well done to everyone for their dedication and achievements!
During the final week of this module, we held our first College Rewards Assembly, celebrating achievements in attendance, merit points, and the prestigious Amy Johnson College Award.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all award winners, with a special mention to the recipients of the Amy Johnson Award, who are proudly listed below:
Macey-Jane J702
Sophia J801
Thomas J901
Elizabeth J1001
Thomas J1101
These milestones remind us of the dedication and talent within our community. Let us continue to cheer for each other's success and foster an environment where excellence is encouraged and celebrated.
We would like to extend special recognition to our Year 11 students, who recently completed their first mock examination series during this module. It has been an intense and demanding three weeks, but we are immensely proud of the maturity, dedication, and effort they have demonstrated in every exam. We eagerly anticipate seeing the results of their hard work when the outcomes are released.
Supporting your child(ren) - Our Dedicated Team
We are delighted to have the privilege of guiding, supporting, and witnessing the growth of our Johnson students as they progress through their journey at our academy. We couldn’t be prouder of how they have adapted to and embraced life here, consistently representing the college with pride both inside and outside the classroom.
We would like to take this opportunity to reintroduce the team members dedicated to supporting our students each day, ensuring you are familiar with those who work closely with your child(ren).

A number of our Cody students have taken an active role in the academy and there has been an increasing number of Cody students attending cross-curricular clubs after school. In addition to extra-curricular clubs the Cody Grammar stream has launched the Cody Choir in module 2. This module students have enjoyed practicing Christmas carols for the end of Module rewards' event where they showcase their talent.
As we wrap up this module, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for your continued support and your child's achievements. This module so far has been a transition for all and they have shown resilience and progress towards what we are striving for as a whole.
I've witnessed incredible growth and positivity among our students both in their academic pursuits and in their contributions to our school community. We eagerly anticipate the new year and the opportunities it brings.

Hewlett College
At Hewlett College, we have been diligently cultivating a culture that embodies Leigh Academy Minster's core values. We're immensely proud of our students, who have consistently exceeded expectations and set a remarkable example for the entire school. We are pleased to announce a 95% cohort attendance rate, with 20 students maintaining 100% attendance.
Hilda Hewlett was a pioneering figure in the field of aviation, becoming the first British woman to earn a pilot's license. Hilda demonstrated determination, resilience, independence and entrepreneurship throughout her career. We are committed to supporting our students as they cultivate their skills and embark on their future endeavours. With students completing controlled assessments and mock examinations, this challenging module has provided students with valuable opportunities to develop their resilience and problem-solving skills.
Through our tutor program, we have delved into the IB Learner Profile attributes, focusing on how to embody these qualities in our everyday interactions and learning experiences, with a particular focus on knowledge and inquiry. We are dedicated to helping students achieve their university aspirations by providing comprehensive UCAS support, including personalised guidance for their personal statements. Through modules one and two during tutor time we have been supporting students in completing their UCAS applications. Whilst we understand university may not be the first choice destination for all of our students, we request all students to complete an application. This is because we understand that our young people may change their mind about their next steps several times in the academic year and we want to ensure all options are available for them.
The deadline for UCAS applications is January 29th. To ensure we can provide appropriate support with applications, we have set an internal deadline for 20th December. The majority of learners have met this and we will be reviewing the applications before submitting them. Any students who have not completed their application by January 13th will be invited to attend a UCAS support session on Wednesday 15th January.
We are incredibly proud of our students who volunteered at our recent school events, including open evenings and parents evenings. Their dedication to our community and their development of key skills exemplify the Hewlett College ethos. We are finishing the module with a rewards assembly to celebrate achievement and progress across subject areas alongside college nominations and a raffle. We would like to take this opportunity to share a special mention to the students that have achieved our Hilda Hewlett Awards:
Ryan - H1306
Summer - H1305
Tia - H1302
Jacob - H1303
In module 3 we will continue to expand the opportunities available to our students, with further volunteering experiences, and extracurricular activities. These currently include joining the school newsletter team, becoming KS3 reading mentors and taking part in a variety of practical clubs. We look forward to welcoming you to our year 13 parents evening on the 16th January.

The Academy Library
Our brand new library has had an incredible impact since it opened in September. It is fast becoming the heart of the academy, as a centre for both developing literacy and improving research skills. Great strides have been made by our dedicated librarian, Ms Obidikhina, in creating a calm and welcoming space for all students.
The library is home to a collection of over 1500 books which will continue to grow, with a range of both fiction and non-fiction texts. Our brand new books are being catalogued and will be available for students to borrow when we return in January.
The library offers a space for all students before school, at break and lunch, and after school. Many students make use of the library and enjoy the calm atmosphere, participating in a range of activities from reading, completing homework, playing chess and completing jigsaws.
In addition to using the library outside of timetabled lessons, all KS3 students will have fortnightly lessons due to begin in January. These lessons will support students in developing their independent reading skills as well as encouraging whole class reading designed to help students build and strengthen their literacy skills.
Literacy is an essential life skill for maximising our students’ academic achievement, employability, and life experiences. Our library plays an integral role in supporting all students in developing these skills. You can also support at home by asking your child about the books they are reading and listening to them read.
We are proud of our library and the positive impact it has already had on the lives of our students. We look forward to welcoming our students back in January and talking about the reading they are enjoying.
Wishing you and your family a restful break.
Pupil Voice
“The lessons are very controlled and calm so there are no disruptions. My personal favourite lessons are PE because I like being active and my teacher is really good. I really enjoy Drama as the teacher makes learning fun and interactive and I enjoy History and Geography as I enjoy learning new things like famous landmarks.”
Toby, Cody College
“The lessons have been a huge improvement including the amount of work that gets completed and the way lessons are shaped and handled. The Chromebooks have been a positive impact to the amount of learning done, and the home learning that has been hugely introduced. After school clubs have been a perfect introduction to supply people with different opportunities.”
Archie, Cody College
“I believe that behaviour is improved. I am learning more in lessons and I feel the use of Chromebooks is good and used in most lessons.”
Rieanne, Johnson College
“Almost every classroom I entered became a better place for learning. It felt like the distraction-free environment I had been promised. Now, lessons are much easier since everyone seems more motivated to learn.”
Ethan, Johnson College
“Before I joined Leigh Academy Minster, I was nervous. I didn't think I would do well and I didn't think I'd enjoy secondary school, just like a lot of people going into a new school. I didn't think I would be with my friends and I believed that I wouldn't have anyone to talk to if I needed any help, and it was hard at first adjusting to a new school, but it gradually sets in. I'm now really enjoying the school and all my classes, and I also see my friends every break and lunch so I can keep in touch. I've made new friends and got to know everyone in my class, and I’m also doing quite well in lessons.”
Izzy, Cody College
Parent and Carer Evenings
It was pleasing to welcome parents and carers along to our Year 10 and 12 parent and carer evening during module 2. There was an extremely positive atmosphere with some fantastic discussions taking place with subject specialist teachers to ensure the best possible outcomes for students.
Parent and carer evenings are a vital part of Academy life ensuring that all students can make the required progress needed to obtain the best possible outcomes for their futures which will open up greater life chances and opportunities. Attendance to these events is crucial for learning about your child's success and in which areas support is needed.
During Module 3, the following events will take place:
Thursday 16th January - Year 11 and Year 13 parent and carer evening. This will be a great opportunity to meet with teaching staff to discuss your child's recent mock examination results and to formulate plans to progress towards their end of year outcomes.
Thursday 30th January - Year 8 parent and carer evening. This will be a great opportunity to meet with teaching staff to discuss your child's progress within their IB middle years programme and the ways in which you can support at home with their achievement.
We look forward to seeing you at future parent and carer events.
Extra-curricular clubs and activities
Module 2 has seen an increase in students taking up our offer of extra-curricular clubs and activities. They take place Monday, Thursday and Friday every week. Please take a look at the club advertisements on our website.
Buses are confirmed for additional collections at 4.30pm so clubs are available to all students at Leigh Academy Minster. If your child wishes to join a club, they can register their interest with the lead member of staff. Details for this are shared in the Student Bulletin weekly and students can ask their tutor for support.
Support for families during the Christmas break
During the two week Christmas break the academy will be closed. Please be aware that there are support groups that operate throughout the whole holiday should you need to reach out:
Sheppey Matters prepares, cooks and provides free hot meals every week, available at The Healthy Living Centre in Sheerness.
Swale Food Bank operates from The Healthy Living Centre in Sheerness available to those who need extra support.
In addition to this, Community Wardrobe which offers access to free school uniform, runs from The Healthy Living Centre Sheerness.
There is also an additional scheme called 'Care for Christmas' which runs over the Christmas period supporting families with care needs. Please see their Facebook page with further information.
