Welcome to our new style Digital Newsletter, which we hope will be easier to access on the various different viewing platforms available today!
This week we all took part in Screen Break day and this was well received by many families who welcomed the change! It was lovely to see the children take part in lots of different activities, we have included some photos in this newsletter.
Next Tuesday we will be taking part in Safer Internet Day, teachers will be setting activities on the classrooms about this. This is particularly significant this year as our children are spending more time than ever before working and socialising online. Please encourage and support your children in completing these activities and learning more about using the internet safely.
Julie Forsythe - Principal
Maintain a daily routine during the school day to provide structure and focus. You may want to create a timetable?
Include breaks, lunch and rewards for completing learning tasks
Provide a quiet working space, free from distractions if possible
Engage in physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day, outside if possible
Include a chill out activity that your child chooses and enjoys doing such as colouring, or craft work
We still have some issues with pupils forgetting to register every day online. It is a legal requirement that children are registered every day and any absence recorded accordingly. If your child is not accessing the google classroom or school through sickness, please advise via the contact book or absence line in the usual manner. Unknown absence will initiate a safeguarding concern and next day calling will be instigated.
Following on from the successful trial in Year 2 this week of daily Drop-In Sessions with the class teacher, this will now be rolled out across all year groups (1-5) commencing next week. These daily sessions replace the weekly google meets and gives children the opportunity to meet with their class teacher - and those classmates that log on - every day for a chat or to ask their class teacher a question or seek help.
Daily timings for each year Group:
Year 1 @ 10 am Year 2 @ 10:15
Year 3 @ 10:30 Year 4 @ 10:45
Year 5 @ 11:00 am
Thank you to all of those children and parents who are continuing to upload lots of home learning and play activities on Tapestry for their teachers to see! We would love to see or hear from all of the children, so if you have not been able to upload any photos or videos yet, please try to do this next week. If you are not sure how to do this, please contact the school office or ask on Tapestry and a member of the EYFS team will be able to help.
Kindness Week
Next week Reception children will be thinking about kindness and ways we can be kind to others. They will be meeting some tiny friends who love to help children find ways to be kind, so look out for Miss Sherress' video on Monday.
Maths
It was great to see in the Pupil Voice Survey that so many of the children are enjoying their maths sessions at home! This week we have seen some amazing rockets for Numberblock 7 and have investigated the numbers on a dice. Next week we meet the 'Fluffies' and deepen our understanding of '7'. Thank you for your continued support with these sessions.
Results from our recent Parents Learning Survey show that over 90% of parents felt the online work was well organised, 92% said it was easy to access and 85% stating it is of a good standard. 78% were confident our remote teaching was supporting their children to learn at home and it was pleasing to note that the majority of parents felt the remote learning had improved since the previous lockdown. 69% of parents felt the amount of work set was adequate, those who did not mainly felt there was too much work set, we will be addressing this point in our full response letter to parents. We will be looking carefully at the feedback conveyed and consider any adaptations required, but will respond separately to the points raised by letter before the end of the term.
One of the main points some parents raised was about 'live' lessons, via platforms such as Zoom. The Trust learning platform is Google and our school system does not support Zoom, which is why we use Google Classroom for teaching and learning and Google Meets for live social interaction with children. Live lessons are not appropriate or feasible for primary age children, as our engagement activity shows that children log on at different points of the day. Often parents are using the devices during the day for their own work and can only support their child's learning later in the day on the same device, a number of parents expressed this was the case in the survey and said they would find live lessons very tricky to manage. We feel it is far better to record 'live' video sessions of the teacher input, which allow pupils to access the lesson whenever it best suits them and stop, rewind and repeat the teaching until they are confident they know what to do. Every child learns at a different pace and this allows children to access the learning in their own time, without pressure.
Following on from the Survey sent out to parents, Cherry Orchard introduced their own Remote Learning Survey for pupils, to give our children a chance to voice their opinion and help our teachers plan exciting lessons that they all enjoy and can access easily. We are delighted with the current responses so far, which indicates that 75% of our pupils in Year 1 - 5 can log on to the Google Classroom independently and 84% can answer the daily question to register, with 80% confident they know how to ask their teacher for help. 60% of those that have returned their questionnaires, so far, feel the work set is 'just right' with only 9% suggesting this is too little. Just under 80% say they find their teachers feedback helpful in improving their work. Of the responses we have received so far - 98% of the children say they enjoy the lessons the teachers set them, which is really encouraging news for the teachers to hear and inspires us to continue to improve our activities to be the best they can be!
This week, staff and pupils took part in a Screen Free Day on Wednesday 3 February in support of Mental Health Awareness Week. This is to raise awareness of the importance of taking regular screen breaks while learning and working from home. Here are some photos of our screen-free activities sent in from pupils learning at home and at school.
