January 2022 - Issue 4
As you will be aware, we have struggled over the past few weeks with staffing as an increasing number of our teachers and support staff have been absent having tested positive for COVID. I am grateful to all staff who have pulled together to cover each others classes and groups to ensure we have been able to remain open for all children whenever we possibly can. Unfortunately this was not possible for year 1 on Monday this week as we did not have any members of the year 1 team in school. However, they did do a great job of transferring the learning over to Google Classroom overnight so it was ready for the children to access from home on Monday morning. Thank you to the parents who took the time to give such positive feedback about the remote learning that was set and how well their children had engaged with it. Of course, we hope that case numbers at Cherry Orchard will soon begin to level off and reduce so we don't encounter such challenging staffing situations moving forwards, but it is great to hear that learning continues at home as well as in school for our children, thank you for your support!
Julie Forsythe - Principal
As you will be aware, COPA has and is continuing to suffer over the past couple of weeks with a rise in COVID cases; several members of staff and students have contracted the virus and are isolating as a result, making staffing impossible in Year 1, where we have had to close the year group for a day. Switching to remote learning overnight, Year 1 have accessed their learning online effortlessly. For our new parents, it is essential that you can log into your Google Account, should similar happen to your year group. If you have any queries with this, please contact your class teacher via Class DoJo in the first instance.
You will have seen the recent guidelines, which are ever changing and we will try to keep you up to date with restrictions as they are updated. Current guidelines mean that your child should attend school all the time they are negative - even if there is a positive case in the household. We appeal to you to continue to test if your child is displaying symptoms of COVID and help us to keep the infection to a minimum. If your child tests positive, there is isolation work on the Google Classroom, where your child can continue their learning online, if they are asympomatic or feeling well otherwise. If your child tests negative on day 5 and then again on day 6, they can return to school. Full guidelines are here.
You will already be aware that we have updated the website with a new button on the front page entitled 'Upcoming Events. We will be adding events to this link as and when events are organised and you can consult this to double check. Additional information will be added as this becomes available, so check in regularly.
You will also be aware that we have now moved over to ClassDojo as our main method of communication between home/family. For our new parents, ClassDojo is an educational technology company which connects primary school teachers, students and families through communication features, including an easy way to communicate with teachers. DoJo points are already currently used in the classroom to reward good behaviour and compliment the IB learner profiles, and families at home will be able to see what Dojo points their child receives. You can read more about this on this link.
If you have not received your link to create an account with Class Dojo and download the app, to communicate with teachers - or you are having difficulty organising this - please speak to your child's class teacher or contact the office for help.
Term 4 Parent consultations via the School Cloud will take place on Wednesday 30th and Thursday 31st March, with the exception of Maple Class where Mrs. Payne will host her parent consultations on Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th March. Invitations for this will be sent out after half-term.
Class newsletters for Term 3 are loaded up onto the website and Class sites have been updated to show children's work and give parents an opportunity to look at what the children are learning. These can be viewed here.
We have not had very much luck with our WIW afternoons for parents, but as soon as restrictions are lifted and covid cases start to reduce, we will be returning to these termly drop-ins. In the meantime, you can keep up to date with what the children are learning via our class sites - as details above.
We are looking for some keen green fingered gardeners to help out with our crop planting for the Spring. We have several large planters in the woodland area that we would like a class to adopt, but this needs an adult 'Gardening Champion' to help plan and organise this on a regular basis. Would perhaps suit keen grandparents who love to garden and work alongside some of our younger children to encourage them to take notice of the nature and wildlife in our woodland area.
Please ensure that your children arrive before 9am. All gates will be closed promptly at this time as main registration closes at 9am so children arriving after this time will be marked as late and staff have other duties to attend to. Please ensure that children arriving late are accompanied by a parent/adult as they will be required to sign the pupil in and provide a reason for the late arrival; this also ensures that a staff member is aware whether your child is having a school dinner. The above applies to nursery children too, if late you will be asked to bring your child to main reception and await a member of the nursery team being free to come and collect your child.
A reminder please that no dogs should be on the school grounds at pick up or drop off times. Although the land outside the school gates is public land and as such is not under school jurisdiction, please could we appeal to parents to please keep their dogs on a lead and under control outside the school gates, as a lot of our children are nervous around animals. We have had a message from a worried parent about their child.
Again there are concerns about bikes and scooters being used around the school gates and on the pathway from the shops. Although, as previously mentioned, this is public land, we are appealing to parents to ensure this area, which is pedestrianised, is as safe as possible for our children and parents waiting outside the school gates for entry. All bikes and scooters should be pushed - not ridden - on the school playground and parked in the cycle shelter.
This week we say 'a bientot' or 'hasta La vista' to Miss Sandhu who is leaving to have a baby (but she assures us she is coming back - so it is not 'adios' ) and 'bienvenue' and 'bienvenidas' to Mrs. Nolan who will take over in Bonsai Class from next week. Miss Sandhu has been with us since the start of COPA so it is with a sad heart that we say cheerio for now. Mrs. Nolan has been working alongside Miss Sandhu in the past few weeks for a smooth transition and has been getting to know the children.
Miss Scales who also leaves us from KS1 ASP this week will be sadly missed, as she has become a great asset to the Extended Schools Team, but we hope she will return to us once her family have grown a little more independent.
We also say farewell to two of our long-standing TAs who are venturing off to try something new - Mrs. Woodhouse, who has taught as a job share with Mrs. Foxwell and been a TA in Year 6, is leaving at the end of term to pursue a new adventure and Mrs. Mills, who is currently off poorly, is leaving Year 5 to work part-time.
The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID)'s new childhood nutrition campaign launched this month! The campaign focuses on using the NHS Better Health Food Scanner app to help families make healthier food swaps.
This toolkit contains ten different activities to help support families to make positive changes to their diet, with a particular focus on making healthier swaps. Activities are easy to run with children aged 4-11, with some activities suitable for children as young as 2, and require minimal preparation and no expert knowledge.
Make sure you also download and watch the Food Scanner App demo animation to find out more, as well as downloading the Food Scanner app itself so you can see how it works and test out the new swaps and augmented reality (AR) features. You can do so for both iPhone and Android.
In addition, here is a link to healthier food swaps recommended by the NHS.
A reminder for our newest parents: due to multiple allergies and parental choice, we do not allow Birthday treats, sweets, cakes and goodie bags into school. Instead we encourage children to bring in a book to share with their class. This might be something of personal interest or culture.
It is really important that named water bottles are sent into school to avoid cross contamination and make sure the children are drinking regularly. Regular water intake is essential as it increases energy and relieves fatigue. Since your brain is mostly water, drinking it helps you think, focus and concentrate better and be more alert.
Please be reminded any leave of absence requested during term time will not be authorised and may be the subject of a penalty notice. Leave of absence must be applied for in writing.
We have returned, this term, to notifying parents if there is a concern over attendance and a standard letter of concern will automatically be sent out to notify parents of the current attendance percentage. The Academy expects 100% attendance, but our EWO, Mrs. Elaine Titterell, monitors the attendance of children below 95%, as well as those children with persistent absence. In some cases, she will call a meeting with parents to discuss next steps or to see how we can support an improvement. We might also request medical evidence for children with persistent absence.
We wll shortly be launching our MCAS online portal for parents ready to activate in Term 4. This will enable parents to book school lunches online and even clubs and trips. Although the parent portal allows the undermentioned information to be available, we will be gradually be introducing a different access to the portal over time, thus allowing information to be viewed as we populate it. We aim to start with online lunch bookings and payments, which we feel is a priority at the present time.
MyChildAtSchool is an online portal for parents that also enables them to view their child's performance at school in real-time via the web. The facility allows the child's attendance, grades and behaviour to all be accessed whenever the parent/carer wants.
As well as pupil performance data, the portal also provides general information about school, such as the school calendar and any announcements. Parents no longer need to wait for termly reports to obtain information about their child, they can check whenever they want for up-to-date information.
Step 1 will be to send out details of how you can log in and activate your account in the next week or so - so look out for this email.
Thank you to those parents and staff that supported this by downloading the app. The school earned £50 in book tokens and Mrs. Newton, our English lead, is busy spending this on books to add to the school library stock.
Please note that this year - World Book Day will be on Thursday 3rd March. In preparation for this, we will be hosting another Book Fair and this will likely take the same format as before. Children should bring in money in a named envelope and will be taken to the Book Fair by their class teachers. The two dates will be Monday 28th February and Wednesday 2nd March. Further details will follow in the next couple of weeks about these Book Fairs and about World Book Day arrangements as well.
Years R - 6 will take part in these exciting musical theatre workshops on Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th February here at the school. Further details will follow, but this is notice in advance. These workshops have been funded as part of our Cultural Capital bid to the Trust - at no cost to parents.
On Tuesday 8th February, Year 4 will also have some visitors or their own - when they meet up with some amazing animals. This session will involve the children meeting some that are endangered and it links in with their learning about sharing the planet.
A busy day on Tuesday 8th February, because this is also Safer Internet Day. The children will be taking part in various in class activities throughout the day planned by our Digital Lead - Miss Boswell - around keeping ourselves safe online.
Our selected Boys and Girls Football Teams practice every Monday after school in readiness for the next Football tournament. Mr. Outram takes this team practice very seriously and we are currently in the process of taking part in friendly inter-school competitions to improve our fitness and skills levels. Watch this space for the next Football tournament.
Three sessions into our newly formed netball club and already we can see some talent emerging; we hope to be ready to participate in some friendly inter-school matches when the weather gets warmer.
This falls on Monday 21st February and Mrs. Mithen our MFL Lead is in the process of organising a week of activities focussing on a different language each day, as well as a whole day of Spanish Workshops with Lingotots. This workshop will be free of charge to our students and is provisionally booked for Wednesday 23rd February. This will take place in the main school hall or the rotunda for mini sessions in year groups, based around either Superheros (EYFS to Year 4) or Harry Potter (Years 5 and 6).
Each session will be approximately 30mins long with 10 minutes for activities and we are wanting the children to dress up as either their favourite Superhero or in Harry Potter style for the day, and bring in a donation of £1 which can be donated to Refugee Action.
Refugee Action helps settle asylum seekers in the UK but giving them language skills amongst other things
Each Tuesday, pupils will be reflecting on different attributes of our Learner Profile and thinking about how these can be demonstrated and nurtured through our learning at school and at home. At the end of the week, teachers will choose a child from each class that has demonstrated the attribute in a particular way and present them with a certificate to take home. Last week we were all great at being knowledgeable - lets see who the teachers spotted being great carers!
Cherry Orchard Primary Academy is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, delivering the curriculum through the Primary Years Programme. To help you as valued members of our learning community, we are introducing words and phrases that we may use when communicating how we approach the curriculum at our academy. (See previous newsletters for 'Agency', 'Key Concepts' and Learner Profile attributes)
This week, we wanted to introduce you to our Approaches to Learning and what these mean in the school learning environment at COPA.
There are 5 approaches to learning that teachers across the school include in the teaching and learning that takes place during their time in school. They support learning across the curriculum. These all support pupils to approach their learning with confidence, increased agency, relevant skills, and enables them to become 'secondary ready' by the time they leave us at COPA.
The area that I want to focus on is self-management skills and in particular states of mind (using strategies that manage a person's state of mind.)
Growth Mindset
A few years ago, Carol Dweck researched “growth mindset” — the idea that we can grow our brain's capacity to learn and to solve problems. She released a book: 'Mindset', that challenged our own mindsets around learning and gave schools a new scientific based research approach when encouraging children in their learning.
This link takes you to a Ted Talk by Carol Dweck which introduces viewers to a particular area. The Power of Yet.
If you don't have time to read Carol Dweck's book, watch this clip to give you an overview. If you are still interested in how to apply this at home with your children, a great book is 'Mindsets for Parents' with some suggestions.
A message to all parents who children have recently joined Cherry Orchard. Please sign up yet for a National Online Safety account by clicking on our unique school link here.

Registration for TERM 4 is now open for bookings this week and will remain open until Monday 31st January @ 9am. Please see below link for booking terms and conditions. Staffing is set according to numbers, so please make sure you register before the closing date.
Our new quiet area has been put on temporary hold because the PTA have very kindly agreed to fund this, meaning this will be a much bigger project than we originally anticipated - but is sure to be magnificent once finished. Anticipated start time for this will be March in readiness for the warmer months. Lunch Clubs will begin again shortly in Year Groups.
With effect from Term 4 - the price for our After School Provision will increase from £9 to £10.
We are also working with Olive Dining to review the light snacks currently offered, with the intention of introducing some hot food options into the menu for the week.
We will also be introducing bookings and payments via the MCAS portal in the future, once this facility has been set up, enabling you to book and pay for sessions online. Watch this space for further details.
Booking for Term 4 Breakfast Club and ASP is now open. Please contact Cherry Finance or Extended Schools if you have not received your invoice the the penultimate week of this term, but first double check your junk mail or spam folder. You will not be able to book for Term 4 if you have an outstanding amount, so please get in touch if you have not received a statement. Once invoices are issued, there can be no further changes because we have high numbers wishing to access these services.
Due to staff shortages, we have had to juggle KS1 pick ups between the Nursery exit as well as the main Reception entrance this term. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and will try to keep this disruption to a minimum in Term 4.
KS1 Breakfast Club will continue to operate from Cherry Pips in the usual manner.
Please note Registration for Activity Clubs will open for Term 4 in the next week. Please select a club choice that your child enjoys. It is sometimes disconcerting when a staff member gives up their time to run a club that the child is not interested in. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis and are very popular, so are limited in numbers. Once spaces reach the maximum, the club offer will automatically close, so please only take up a space if your child really wants to do the activity.
Please be aware that we are struggling with staffing for our Term 3 clubs currently, so the Activity Club offer for Term 4 may be a little delayed, whilst we arrange staffing.
Please do not allow your children to ride their bikes or scooters on the playground or on the pedestrian area outside the school
Please remember no dogs on the playground and be cautious around young children waiting outside the school gate
