The nonprofit arm of Latin Appalachian, rebuilding hope, one meal and one neighbor at a time.
The Nehemiah Project is the nonprofit arm of Latin Appalachian, created to serve McDowell County through food, fellowship, and community rebuilding.
Inspired by the biblical story of Nehemiah, we believe communities are restored one brick at a time — or in our case, one meal at a time.
We exist to meet practical needs, fight food insecurity, and offer dignity, hope, and connection to every person who comes through our doors.
The Fellowship Table transforms Latin Appalachian's restaurant space into a free or donation-based dining room where everyone is welcome.
During Fellowship Table hours, guests can enjoy:
Chef-prepared meals
A warm and welcoming atmosphere
No income or proof requirements
A seat at the table — no questions asked
All dine-in opportunities will be at the Fellowship Table. This is where our nonprofit and our restaurant meet. Latin Appalachian provides the kitchen. The Nehemiah Project provides the mission. All cooked to perfection by your favorite Chef.
Fellowship Table Dine-In:
Monday–Friday: 11 AM – 6 PM
Hours vary; please check our Facebook page for updates.
The Fellowship Table is more than a meal service — it is a community table, a neutral, welcoming space where everyone in McDowell County can come together.
Hosted inside Latin Appalachian during designated dine-in hours, The Fellowship Table transforms the restaurant into a place where:
Families eat side-by-side with neighbors
Seniors find companionship
Community members meet in a safe, warm environment
People from all backgrounds feel seen, valued, and included
This is not a “soup kitchen” and not charity in the traditional sense. It’s a shared table, designed intentionally to preserve dignity and build community.
Whether you give a donation, pay for your meal, or simply need a place to sit and eat free of charge —
you belong here.
The Fellowship Table exists to bring all people together, including:
Working families
widows/widowers
Retirees
People in crisis
Students
Those new to the community
Individuals simply looking for connection
There is no stigma attached to sitting at this table.
There is no separation between those who give and those who receive.
There is simply community.
This is a place to talk, laugh, rest, share stories, or quietly enjoy a meal — whatever the day calls for.
Each meal is crafted by Chef Taco Man and the Latin Appalachian team with the same care, quality, and flavor as the restaurant’s traditional menu.
Because dignity matters, meals are plated beautifully and served with warmth.
Because belonging matters, guests choose where they sit and stay as long as they like.
Because community matters, volunteers and staff sit alongside guests, sharing life together.
The Fellowship Table is designed to rebuild fractured connections in our community by creating a common ground—a place where:
Rich and poor can sit together
Different generations can share time
Individuals healing from hardship sit beside those eager to serve
Barriers come down and understanding grows
Food breaks walls.
Conversation builds bridges.
The Fellowship Table creates both.
When disaster, emergency, or community crisis occurs, The Nehemiah Project will mobilize and deploy hot, chef-prepared meals to those affected.
This includes:
Feeding families displaced by floods, fires, or storms
Supporting first responders on extended calls
Serving communities experiencing sudden hardship
Partnering with local agencies during emergency response
Our commitment: If the community needs hot meals, we show up.
We will provide opportunities for individuals to learn practical cooking skills on both personal and professional levels.
This includes:
Basic cooking for families wanting to stretch their food budget
Safe food-handling workshops
Creativity and cultural cooking classes
Kitchen confidence classes for youth and adults
The Nehemiah Project will support individuals—especially those facing barriers to employment—by offering:
Mentorship for those interested in starting a food trailer, food tent, or micro-catering business
Skill-building pathways for people re-entering the community after incarceration
Opportunities for people in recovery who want to rebuild their lives
Hands-on experience in a real kitchen environment
One-on-one guidance from Chef Taco Man and Latin Appalachian leadership
Our goal is to help people gain confidence, skills, and income through meaningful work in the food industry.
Your generosity transforms ingredients into meals and meals into moments of hope.
