Overview of Language Arts:

Mrs. O’Brien will teach language arts this year. The language arts curriculum is designed around the Common Core Standards and will incorporate the textbook, Pearson’s My Perspectives. Students have received a hard copy of the book and will also be able to access an interactive text online. Students will read and respond to a variety of texts and learn strategies to more deeply understand the meaning of the text. Students will read high quality novels in class, as well as short stories and poetry, and will learn skills, such as annotation and finding supporting evidence, to analyze literature. Students will have class and small group discussions that respond to and build on each others’ ideas and that require evidence to support their arguments. In addition to responding to texts in writing, students will write a variety of text formats, including nonfiction narrative, expository, persuasive, and a problem-solution research paper. There is a large emphasis on the process of writing and, for this reason, most writing will be worked on in class. Last, students will present to the class throughout the year. One presentation that is required of all 6th graders is the Speech Contest which take place in the spring.

Students will continue to use to online resources that they used in 5th grade, Reading Plus and IXL. Students will use Google Classroom to create and submit writing assignments.

For language arts homework, students are expected to read nightly and complete weekly Reading Plus assignments. Occasionally, there may be additional homework which will be written in agendas. Please check agendas nightly for up to date information. For grades, please check Powerschool weekly for graded, missing, and/or incomplete assignments.
