ORCHESTRA INSTRUMENT RENTALS FOR ASPEN, BARRANCA, MOUNTAIN and LAHS STUDENTS - As many of you know, LAPS always runs out of rental instruments. If your child is firmly interested in being in orchestra, I strongly suggest committing to renting an instrument in the Spring before your child starts 4th grade - so your child is sure to get an instrument. If you pay and fill out the rental contract, I will save an instrument for your child - and deliver it to their school to be ready for our 1st day of class. Other dates I am available to rent out instruments or exchange for the next size up are listed below. In order to rent/save an instrument, please print, fill out and email or deliver this document Instrument Rental Contract, to me - with the top portion filled out. Also, please pay online ($100 for the school year, $50 for summer) on the District tab, here and print or forward a copy of the payment confirmation to me at m.rosette@laschools.net. I cannot accept a check. While it is ok to come inspect the instrument first, I cannot release an instrument to you without these 2 items (contract and proof of payment). It is best to visit with your child so we can be sure to size appropriately. If you cannot bring your child, try sizing them at home at this site. Please be aware we do not have any 1/4 size violins; the smallest size we have is 1/2. I am located in B wing at LAHS (park in the big Duane Smith Auditorium lot; go up the wheelchair ramp on the East side of the building connected to Duane Smith Auditorium, walk in the doors, turn left, my office is the 1st door on the left and is appropriately labeled). If school is in session, you must check in at the main office with photo id, first. If school is not in session, you can just come directly to my office . If you are out of town, consider asking a neighbor to come grab an instrument. I will rent instruments out later, of course, but I will run out quickly. There are other places to rent instruments including the Santa Fe Violin Shop and Robertson and Son's Violin Shop in Albuquerque (this is the shop I use for my family).
For elementary students, the 2 books you will need are: I Can Read Music, Volume 1 (for your appropriate instrument) by Joanne Martin and New Directions for Strings, Volume 1 (for your appropriate instrument). These are the only 2 books you will need for your child's entire elementary orchestra career. Students will also need a yellow plastic pocket folder with brads. For violin and viola players, please consider purchasing a Kun shoulder rest. This is the best, most versatile shoulder rest. It can adjust in size such that it should last for many years. A shoulder rest helps your violin or violist hold up their instrument appropriately making life easier and much more comfortable. The collapsing Kun shoulder rests break more quickly than the standard Kun; the standard Kun is also less expensive. There are other brands (cheaper) but in my vast experience, they break quickly or are not adjustable. Thanks for considering this extra purchase.
High School students may pick out and rent an instrument during class time but proof of payment must be shown (or forwarded to me) before your child can "own" it for the year. If another student wants the instrument your child has picked out, they will get to have it - if they pay first.
Dates I SHOULD be available to rent out instruments or be available to hand out instruments that have already been paid for are listed, below. Please remember that I teach in 5 schools and often at the beginning of the year, I get pulled here and there. If you'd like to send me an email to let me know date/time when you're coming, then I will be sure to be there. m.rosette@laschools.net
