When students meet with the school counselor they are entitled to confidentiality. It is important that they feel they have a safe place to talk. Often students on their own will talk to their teachers or parents about what is said with the school counselor. For school counselors to share details of what is said, permission from the students must be obtained about whether they are comfortable, or what they are comfortable sharing.

Important unless there is a concern, parents will not be contacted if the student has met with the school counselor.

Confidentiality is only broken when

  • A student wants/or is hurting themselves

  • A student is wanting or is hurting others

  • If someone is hurting the student

  • The student gives specific permission to share with an adult

Students are made aware of what confidentiality is and when it can be broken.
