Dear All,
Welcome to the first reading newsletter of this academic year. For our new families, this half termly reading newsletter is dedicated to reading news across the school and is a platform for us to share book recommendations and tips for how you can immerse your child in reading at home to complement the work we do in school from the very start of phonics where children are learning to decode through to their journey as independent readers.
If you haven't already, and your child is in Early Years Foundation Stage or Key Stage 1 and still on their phonics journey, please join the phonics parents and carers training on Thursday 6th November. The training is virtual in order to support your attendance for those with young families. The training talks through the challenges children face when learning to read, the process on how we teach reading in school and how you can support your child with learning to read at home since practice really is key! If your child is still on the phonics pathway then you will have received further information on the progress that your child has made in reading so far this year.
We are extremely fortunate to have very well stocked class libraries due to regular school investment and money that we distribute from fundraising into new book purchases. Even though we are not lucky enough to have the space for one whole school library, our key stage ones host a range of titles which are frequently updated. Our children can recommend books to be purchased using QR codes dotted around the school.
In Key Stage Two news, we are delighted that we have some new Reading Ambassadors to welcome to the existing team. Some of them have introduced themselves later in this newsletter. It's fantastic to have such an enthusiastic group to help promote reading across the school! Also, if your child in is Key Stage 2, you should have received a letter before half term with your child's reading fluency score. Reading fluency is critically important because it acts as the bridge between word recognition (decoding) and reading comprehension. Thank you for supporting your children by continuing to listen to them reading aloud and discussing books with them even as they become independent readers.
On Wednesday 22nd October, Upper Key Stage Two joined the multi-award-winning, local author, Hannah Gold for an amazing national online book launch for her new book The Lone Husky. Hannah's first book The Last Bear was Blue Peter Children's Book of the Year and Waterstones Children's Book of the Year, and since then she has written The Lost Whale, Finding Bear and Turtle Moon. The children took part in an interactive quiz and Hannah shared exciting stories of her real-life research that she carries out to support her writing. The children gained lots of inspiration for their own narrative work.
It was lovely to see such a fantastic turn out for our parents and carers 'Stop, Drop and Read' session last half term. The children loved having you into school to read to them with the addition of any siblings, or the opportunity for them to read to you in school. We are already looking forward to our next ones on Thursday 5th March (which is also World Book Day!) and Friday 8th May - we may even be able to take our reading outside during the May event!
Enjoy exploring the rest of this newsletter for reading tips, an introduction from some of our Reading Ambassadors and the menu at the top for even more about reading!
Kind regards,
Mrs Smith and Mrs Francis

The Majority Awkward BFF Dramas of Lottie Brooks by Katie Kirby
Reviewed by Rebeca
This is a super funny book all about Lottie, a totally normal (and totally awkward) girl trying to survive school, friends, and growing up! Her best-friend dramas are next-level — one minute they’re BFFs forever, the next they’re arguing about who gets the last cookie. Lottie’s life is full of hilarious moments, embarrassing crushes, and epic friendship fails. There are diary entries, doodles, and LOL-worthy secrets. It’s like reading your best friend’s private journal (but way funnier). Perfect for anyone who’s ever had a BFF drama meltdown or just wants a good giggle.

Lark Rise Reading Ambassadors
Here is a little bit about some of our Reading Ambassadors and their favourite books....
Katarina
Hello my name is Katarina and I am 10 years old. I just received the honour of being a Reading Ambassador which I am very proud of. One of my favorite books is Rainbow Grey, it is about a 10 year old called Ray Grey who wishes she had magic like her friends. Life in the Weatherlands just isn’t the same without it! But then a forbidden trip to Earth turns everything Ray thought she knew about herself upside down. Ray must dig deep to find her inner power, battle new enemies and let her true colours shine. That was the first book, there are three books; the first one is Rainbow Grey, the second is Rainbow Grey: Eye of the storm and the third one is Rainbow Grey: Battle of the skies. Rainbow Grey is written by the bestselling author of Amelia Thang, Laura Ellen Anderson. I recommend this book to people with big imaginations and anyone who loves an adventure. Ray and her two friends set off on numerous quests to protect the weatherlands and find more about Rainbow Grey's rare power.
Charlotte
Hello my name is Charlotte and I am in year four. I have been a Reading Ambassador for just over a year. My favourite thing about being a Reading Ambassador is reading to the children in reception and key stage one. This is because I love reading out loud and I love it even more when I see the smiles on their faces as they are enjoying the story. I enjoy TONS of books but my absolute favourite at the moment is “The catastrophic friendship fails of Lottie Brooks” by Katie Kirby. The book is about a girl called Lottie who has a friend (Molly) that has recently returned to England from Australia. Jealousy flares in the friendship group when Lottie and her other friend Jess get a good part in the school play. However, through ups and downs, they all work things out in the end. I adore this book because the storytelling is really funny and it made me laugh - lots! My favourite part of this book is when Lottie has a nightmare. In it, she dresses up as a crab and sings a very funny song! I would recommend this book to 7 year olds and above.
Neri
Hello my name is Neri. I’m in year 5 and in Eagles class. This is my second year of being a Reading Ambassador. I love to read and my most recent book is Malory Towers by Enid Blyton. I can't say it is my favourite book because I love lots of books. But it is a mystery and adventure book about a girl called Darrell who starts at a boarding school for girls. They have lots of fun as well playing pranks on their teachers and on their spoilt classmate Gwendoline. I think everyone should read this book or series at least once!
Haajer
Hello my name is Haajer and I am absolutely astonished and thankful that I am now a reading ambassador! I love to help everyone embrace reading even though they might find it hard or may not enjoy it but deep inside everyone has got a passion for reading . It may be small or big but reading opens the world and hearts ! My favourite book in the whole wide world is... 'Wonder'! The book shows that no matter who you are, you can do anything and no matter what you look like we are all beautiful! Also no matter if you are finding something hard dont let it get to your head. I really recommend this book!
Theo
I am Theo and as a Reading Ambassador I take responsibility of helping younger children learn to read.
My favourite book is 'The Witches' by Roald Dahl, the reason why this is my favourite book is because I like the bit where the grand high witch turns the little boy into a mouse.
At home I also create my own books to bring in to school, the one I am working on at the minute is called 'Starborn, the lost spaceboy'.
