Dear Parents and Carers,
Our children in Key Stage 1 have been very excited about some mysterious dragon eggs that turned up in their classroom this half term; what an exciting 'magic moment' to start off a unit of learning. They have been emailing me to tell me about their findings and I am looking forward to hearing more about their research. I was most surprised to discover that Miss Warren managed to capture some video footage of the dragon flying around our school grounds! Our children in Lower Key Stage 2 have also been part of a 'magic moment' for their history learning on the Greeks. A wonderful immersive day was had at the end of the topic with food tasting, Greek art, spartan training and more! The 'magic moment' came to an end with a Greek Museum showcase of some of their work. Thank you if you were able to attend this event and also for ensuring your child looked the part on the Greek day. All of the children (and staff) had an excellent day. Huge thanks to the Lower Key Stage 2 team for continuing to provide these opportunities for our children.
Last week I was also pleased to see so many parents and carers attend our Technology for Learning information event to hear about our 1:1 chromebook scheme for Key Stage 2. All information has been sent out to parents and carers of children in Key Stage 2 next year and is available on our website. Please remember to fill out the Google form before next week's deadline on Thursday 9th May. There was a buzz of conversation around learning in the classrooms afterwards during our 'book look' evening. Thank you if you were able to attend this with your child and provide them the opportunity to talk through their learning with you. I have heard from so many teachers who said it was lovely to hear the children explaining their learning in their books to you.
Yesterday we were delighted to take Lower Key Stage 2 to London to visit The Science Museum. The children had an exciting day full of exploration and were naturally exhausted after a long day out (so were the adults). Thank you so much to our parent helpers who were able to accompany us on the trip; your support with these events makes 'magic moments' like this possible for our children and are a vital part of the school's enrichment programme. Thank you to Miss Spokes for the planning and organisation of her first trip too!
Finally, thank you to all of our parents and carers in Owls and Robins class who were able to attend their class assembly today. I am sure you will agree, the children were all incredible and showcased their learning beautifully. They have come such a long way since they started in September and we are so pleased to be able to share just some of their learning with you in this way.
I hope you all enjoy the long weekend together with your family and I will see you all on Tuesday next week; fingers crossed for some dry weather although it's looking a bit hit and miss!

Headteacher
Each week in our whole school assembly we celebrate children's attendance by playing a game of Attendopoly (based on Monopoly). The class with the highest attendance figure is rewarded with a class prize.
The winning class for the last week was:
Week of 15th April: Penguins Class with 100% attendance
Whole school attendance : 96.5%
Week of 22nd April: Peacocks Class with 99.4% attendance
Whole school attendance : 96.7%
Our whole school target attendance for this academic year across all classes is 97%.
As you will be aware, all children in Reception, Years 1 and 2 receive a free school meal under the Government's "Universal Infant Free School Meals" initiative. However, some children will also qualify for Income/Benefit Related free school meals due to their personal circumstances. Whilst this does not affect your child's receipt of a free meal, if you are registered for free school meals via Central Beds Council, the school will receive additional funding in order to provide additional support. This funding is known as Pupil Premium and brings in up to an additional £1320 per child that is registered.
We can use the extra funding in any way we choose to improve the quality of our children's education. This could include intervention and support for individual and small groups, additional training for staff and financial support for parents for educational visits, after school provision and assistance with our proposed 1:1 chromebook devices.
If you think you may be eligible, please visit the following www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/info/53/benefits/4/free_school_meals/3 and apply accordingly on the Central Beds Council website. If you apply and find out that you are eligible for the extra funding, please contact the school office when you receive notification that your child qualifies for Free School Meals. Whatever the outcome of your application (whether you qualify or not) it will not affect any other benefits that you may receive.

Banksy
Our Artist of this half-term is Banksy. We were interested to find out all about him. We learnt how no-one knows who Banksy is as he keeps his identity a secret! We do know he is a graffiti artist who lives in Bristol and that he uses his artwork as a way of expressing his opinions about events or problems that are happening in the world. We considered the question 'Is graffiti vandalism or art?'
The children were challenged to consider different ways they could express their own ideas and opinions about problems happening in the world such as climate change and hunger. I look forward to seeing some of their amazing artwork.
ABBA
This half term we are learning all about the Swedish Pop sensations ABBA with their infectious disco tracks such as 'Dancing Queen' and 'Money, Money, Money'. We have started by learning to sing the Eurovision smash hit 'Waterloo' as a whole school so we hope you can have some fun with this at home too. In addition to this, every half term we focus on one of the seven main building blocks of music known as the interrelated dimensions of music. This half term we are studying 'dynamics' (the volume of a piece of music). The children listened to the powerful anthem 'Chiquitita' and tracked the dynamics through the song to study the emotional effect on the listener. You could always give this a go at home with other songs?
Aspens (our school catering contractor) have a vacancy for a Kitchen Assistant to be based at Lark Rise. The link to apply for the position is :

There will be a change to the menu for the week of 13th May only. Please see the revised menu above and on the school website. Thursday 16th May is the termly school census day from which we receive our annual funding which is influenced by the number of children having a school meal on that day.
The Department for Education (DfE) have made a number of changes to legislation and guidance related to school attendance that are due to come into force on 19th August 2024.
The Education (Penalty Notices) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2024 – The DfE has introduced a national threshold of 10 sessions of Unauthorised Absence in 10 school weeks and has placed a duty on a Headteacher to consider issuing a penalty notice each time an individual pupil meets this threshold. Changes have been made to the amount of the Fixed Penalty Notice and the number of occasions these may be issued with specific time periods. There is also introduction of a Notice to Improve being issued following receipt of a referral from a school to issue a Fixed Penalty Notice for non-attendance cases (not Unathorised Holidays). The Notice to Improve allows a fixed period of time for no further absences to occur and which would mean the FPN would not be issued if this happens.
