Newsletter 20.10.2023
Dear Parents and Carers,
I can't believe how quickly we have come to the end of the first half term; it has gone by so quickly yet so much has been achieved! This week we had some visitors to the school from Chiltern Learning Trust and an external consultant to carry out some quality assurance of our subjects and to look at the Personal Development on offer at Lark Rise and how we develop the children's character. The staff involved led this monitoring extremely well and the children they spoke to were also able to talk about their learning positively, showcasing how much they've learnt about and remembered in the subjects involved. We were delighted with the outcome and the overwhelming positive comments that the visitors shared about our wonderful school; there were lots of strengths to celebrate and the areas of development will continue to support us to make the learning on offer to our children at Lark Rise even better! A huge well done to all of the team involved.
Last week I absolutely loved watching Hawks class assembly! It was a fantastic showcase of their learning so far this year with a good dose of humor; thank you to all of our families that managed to attend.
Thank you to all of our parents and careers who attended our learning review meetings last week. These initial meetings are designed to inform you on how your child has settled into their new classes. Maths and English learning review meetings will take place at the start of the Spring term with your child's Maths and English teacher. Please see further on in this newsletter for all of the opportunities throughout the year where we will inform you of your child's progress.
A big thank you to FALLS and all of the parent helpers who organised our Halloween disco on Monday; it was a huge success with lots of children attending. Without the support of all of our parents and carers we would not be able to raise vital funds to support our school which is becoming more and more important now than ever. Thank you if you gave up your time to organise or support on the night, it is much appreciated.
Lower Key Stage Two's Tudor day and art gallery was a 'magic moment' not to be missed this week. The children thoroughly enjoyed immersing themselves into Tudor life and I'm sure you will agree the photos on Facebook show what a memorable time they all had. Thank you for ensuring your child looked the part and big thanks to the adults in Lower Key Stage 2 who worked so hard to plan such a successful day for the children.
This week saw the first of our parents and carers training of the year with a focus on phonics. There was an increase in attendance from last year which was great. If you have not yet accessed this training and your child is learning phonics still, then we highly recommend that you access the recording in order to learn how to support your child at home with learning to read. It is likely that this file will be too large for our website so we will endeavor to share it via Google drive.
Finally, I'd like to finish this half term with thanks to the children and staff. This half term has got off to a great start and that is all down to the amazing work that the staff do day in and out to support the children to be the best they can be! The children are an absolute delight to work with and I am really looking forward to seeing them when they return after a much needed rest.
Mrs Romina Lang
Headteacher
Each week in our whole school assembly we celebrate children's attendance by playing a game of Attendopoly (based on Monopoly). The class with the highest attendance figure is rewarded with a class prize.
The winning classes for the last two weeks were:
Week of 2nd October : Hawks Class with 100% attendance.
Week of 9th October : Peacocks Class with 99.4% attendance.
Our whole school target attendance for this academic year across all classes is 97%.
Across the school we have a weekly hall of fame, where we celebrate different aspects of times table recall. This includes effort, speed and accuracy.
Well done to the following children who have logged on regularly at home and achieved a place in our hall of fame so far this half term in the following categories :
KS1
16/10/23 : Most correct answers : Kiaan, Mike, Myra, Teddy T
LKS2
16/10/23 : Improved accuracy : Amber, Oliver, Ellie, Poppy, Demi, Emily
UKS2
16/10/23 : Most correct answers : Anson, Antony, Aaron, Ayomide
Please take a moment to look at the above poster which provides information around the shoebox appeal we would like to support at Lark Rise Academy, with support from you, our families. We have chosen to use 'link to hope' which is an organisation that supports some of the poorest and most troubled areas in Romania, Moldova, Ukraine and Bulgaria.
The children have been spoken to about this during assembly and will be coming home with the relevant checklists and gift aid forms to help them get started with filling a box.
However we want to give the children a choice to either fill a box completely or bring in items from the list to add to a box we will make in school.
We would like to welcome both completed/filled boxes OR items to put into shared boxes on or before Monday 6th November 2023. Please bring these to the school office.
If you require additional copies of the checklists and/or gift aid forms required please pop into the school office where some will be available.
We would welcome any spare empty shoeboxes, festive wrapping paper and donations of 50p to support in the sending of our gifts if you are choosing to contribute to the ones we will put together in school.
Many thanks for your support with giving others the gift of hope.
We have not yet received any Christmas jumpers for the Jumper Swap in preparation for Christmas Jumper Day on Thursday 7th December. This is an opportunity for you to donate any outgrown Christmas jumpers that could benefit another child. If you have any jumpers you would like to swap, please bring them into school after the half term holiday and we will make arrange a time for a swap to take place. Obviously we cannot guarantee that if you donate a jumper there will necessarily be one for you to take in exchange.

New Catering Company (Aspens)
As you are aware, Chiltern Learning Trust has signed a new contract across the Trust schools to provide the school meals service. Please see the new menu below which will be in place from after the October half term. The menus are also available on the school website. The cost of the meals will remain the same (£2.60 per day) and payments will continue to be made via Parentmail although you will be unable to book any meals for after half term until Saturday 21st October. We will return to school on 31st October on Week 3 menu.
We will once again be holding a Scholastic bookfair after school on Friday 3rd and Monday 6th November. Further details will be sent out after half term but wanted to make you aware of this event.
As you will be aware, all children in Reception, Years 1 and 2 receive a free school meal under the Government's "Universal Infant Free School Meals" initiative. However, some children will also qualify for Income/Benefit Related free school meals due to their personal circumstances. Whilst this does not affect your child's receipt of a free meal, if you are registered for free school meals via Central Beds Council, the school will receive additional funding. This funding is known as Pupil Premium and brings in up to an additional £1320 per child that is registered.
We can use the extra funding in any way we choose to improve the quality of our children's education. This could include intervention and support for individual and small groups, additional training for staff and financial support for parents for educational visits and after school provision.
If you think you may be eligible, please visit the following www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/info/53/benefits/4/free_school_meals/3 and apply accordingly on the Central Beds Council website.
Alternatively scan the QR code below for further information.
If you apply and find out that you are eligible for the extra funding, please contact the school office when you receive notification that your child qualifies for Free School Meals. Whatever the outcome of your application (whether you qualify or not) it will not affect any other benefits that you may receive.
EYFS
Lilli-Mae
Lilli-Mae has always been a quieter member of the class, often needing reassurance to join in and to express her ideas and needs. This term she developed the confidence to speak clearly in her play and with adults. She now enjoys accessing all areas of the nursery independently. We are very proud of how she has looked after some of the new children, inviting them to play with her and guiding them to join in with activities. Well done Lilli-Mae!
Jessica T
From the minute Jessica started in Ducklings class she has demonstrated superb skills of resilience and perseverance. She quickly settled into the routines of the class and follows the rules daily, showing excellent behaviour. She is always keen to attempt the activities on offer and tries her best in everything she does. Well done Jessica! Keep up the hard work
Roman
It has been wonderful to see Roman’s confidence develop through the half term, to take part in lessons and offer thoughts, suggestions and answers to our learning. He is always so happy and proud of himself, showing his beaming smile when he is praised for his efforts. We are so proud of you; keep on being brave and sharing your learning with us.
Hanna
Hanna is a newer member of the Lark Rise family and she has settled into school life beautifully. Hanna’s confidence to share information with the class has grown and she will now happily answer questions and is beginning to develop reasoning skills too. Hanna has shown great skills of perseverance in her Read Write Inc learning, learning to use Fred talk to read words. Well done Hanna; keep up the hard work.
Trixie
Trixie doesn’t always find coming into school easy but over the past couple of weeks it has been lovely to see her come in with a smile on her face. She is showing resilience with managing her feelings whilst at school and trying to be more confident and show enjoyment whilst learning and playing with new things. Keep it up Trixie!
Viyan
Viyan was a little nervous about beginning school. He had never been to Lark Rise before and was a little shy to begin with. He has overcome his nerves and is trying really hard to focus during carpet sessions. Viyan understands our classroom rules, follows instructions given. He has made one very special friend and he’s beginning to widen his friendship group.
KS1
Zakariya
Zakariya is a new member of the Lark Rise family, joining us in year 2. He was apprehensive about starting school, worrying about the unknown. However, he has been incredibly determined and resilient, overcoming his apprehension to really fit into life at school. He is incredibly confident in his lessons, always wanting to participate and will help his peers if they are unsure of anything. He treats all those around him with kindness and consideration, something that is allowing him to become more resilient when faced with social challenges he has not encountered previously. He is taking great pride in being a member of the school community and does his best with everything he does!
Celeste
Celeste was really worried and nervous about the transition from Reception to Year 1, but she has overcome her fears and proven to be a really resilient Penguin. Initially she found afternoons to be a challenge, but made sure to allow herself to feel her emotions before picking herself back up and trying her best in lessons. She has really opened up to her friends and will always encourage others, providing comfort and reassurance. She is always willing to try something new, even if it can make her feel a little bit nervous, which has meant she has gained confidence and is flourishing!
Victor
Victor has started off this year with such an amazing resilient attitude that I have been so impressed with him in so many ways already. Most recently, Victor came back from lunch after having his first school dinner and told me how he had been so worried about it at first but then he actually enjoyed it. He’s also been trying lots of new foods in his lunch box and has been so proud of himself, as are his teachers; fantastic!
Gracie
Gracie was worried at the beginning of the year about her Maths learning and found comfort in seeking help from the adults in her class in case she made mistakes or couldn’t do it. It has been wonderful to watch her bloom and become more independent, understanding that mistakes help us grow. Gracie has discovered that when she is resilient there is nothing she can’t do and if not at first then after practice; well done Gracie!
Oscar
Oscar was a little unsettled transitioning into KS1 from Reception and found the change quite daunting and could get a little upset. However now we have all noticed a big improvement in his mood when coming into school and he seems to enjoy school a lot more now that he is getting into the swing of things in Parrots class. While Oscar still gets a little worried about change and trying new things, he has a much more positive attitude and is showing resilience in all areas of his learning, especially recently in his P.E lessons working on his ball skills. Keep up the good work, Oscar!
Hadassa
Hadassa has come back to school this year starting in Year 2 with such an infectious love of learning. She has been working extra hard on improving her reading skills and persevering with her spelling and writing ideas in her own work. Hadassa began Blue group this half term guessing some of the green words and worrying she didn’t know them but after practising at school and at home she is familiarising herself more with new words and even reading longer words. Well done for being so optimistic and working hard, Hadassa!
LKS2
Gabriela
It has been lovely to see Gabriela growing in confidence. She is rising to the challenge of extra responsibilities and I have been so impressed with her new found confidence in offering answers and also supporting others with their learning. Sometimes learning can be tricky but Gabriela exhibits resilience and will always approach tasks with positivity and concentration. Well done, Gabriela!
Leo
Leo has shown resilience in his learning at all times. This has been lovely to see and Leo is now much more positive in approaching his learning, especially where tasks may be trickier and he is believing in himself much more. Leo will seek help and then act upon this to ensure he shows us his wonderful understanding. Leo has shown us that he truly understands that making mistakes is all part of learning…well done Leo!
Oluwatomi
Tomi has truly impressed us with his ability to put his all into his swimming lessons. As a beginner, Tomi was naturally nervous about swimming. However, week on week, we were amazed to see Tomi’s confidence grow, alongside the big smile on his face. Tomi listened to his instructor, worked really hard and his resilience paid off! He progressed by moving up to a different swimming group and is now more confident in the water. Well done Tomi!
Annabelle
As a newer member of our class, Annabelle has grown in confidence and settled in perfectly to life at Lark Rise! Annabelle takes on every task with a positive attitude and puts 110% into her learning. Not only this, but Annabelle has pushed herself outside of her comfort zone socially at break times to introduce herself and play with others. Well done Annabelle, you are a star.
Rhys
Rhys has really impressed us with his positive attitude to his learning since he has come back to school in September. He is listening well in all of our lessons and will always work hard to complete his learning to the best of his ability. He is showing real resilience with his written work and has been working so hard on his spelling and handwriting and because of this, he is making real progress in these areas. Very well done Rhys on a fantastic start to Year 4; I am very proud of you.
Precious
Precious joined our school in September and I am so proud of her and how quickly she has fitted into our class and our school routines. Initially she found some of it a little bit tricky but she showed real resilience and perseverance and is now able to follow all of our classroom and school rules and expectations. This resilience has continue in our weekly swimming lessons; in her first lesson, Precious was hesitant and now she is approaching each lesson confidently and with 100% effort in every lesson. Well done Precious.
UKS2
Mia
In her first English writing assessment of the year, Mia found it tricky to put her thoughts and ideas into her written work. This upset Mia a little bit and made her worry that she ‘wasn’t very good at English’. However, with a motivational talk with Mrs Dundon and Mrs True, Mia was soon smiling again and feeling good about all the things she could do. Since then, she has produced two wonderful pieces of assessed writing: a first-person description narrative and a diary entry. It is clear from her writing that she tries so hard with every piece of work and the hard work is paying off Mia - keep up that positive attitude.
Bradley
One lunchtime earlier this term, Bradley came into the classroom and appeared nervous about something. When asked whether he was okay, Bradley said that he was about to try out for the school football team! Mrs True wished him good luck and told him to try his best. A few days later, Bradley’s face was beaming: he had made the ‘A’ team - something he said he had never managed before! Well done for pushing through your nerves Bradley and achieving something that you had clearly waited a long time for.
Kian
Kian has made such a strong, positive start to his time in Year 6. When things have felt difficult for him in the classroom, he has shown a much stronger resilience to keep going and be part of the classroom learning. After having been voted class representative by his fellow classmates, Kian has risen to his responsibilities well and always remembers to complete his daily jobs relating to this. Keep believing in yourself Kian and pushing through when things are feeling that bit tougher for you.
Alicia
It has been a delight to have Alicia in Eagles class this year. From the start of her time with us, she has shown a quiet, yet determined resilience to do the best in all aspects of her learning. Although she is a quieter member of the class, she has become braver to share her ideas with her classmates and these have always been really valued. She will more willingly ask now if she is unsure of anything and I would encourage her to keep doing this as she reflects well on her learning.
Connor
Connor has made an excellent start to Year 6. Connor sometimes finds things tricky but he has built up his resilience to help him tackle these challenges. He is a fantastic member of Falcons class, always helping others and showing kindness. Connor has shown his confidence in our PSHE lessons, acting out different role play scenarios to the rest of the class. He has also become more confident in talking to adults to express his feelings and has built some excellent relationships. Well done Connor, we are so proud of you!
Beau
Changing classes can be overwhelming but Beau has coped brilliantly with the transition. Beau shows great determination and always challenges herself in everything she does, especially in Maths! She is always kind and helpful to everyone and always contributes to class discussions. Beau is excelling in her leadership skills- she is a natural born leader! She is always positive and always encouraging others. We are so proud of you Beau!
We would like to build up our supplies of boxes of tissues in readiness for the "runny nose" season. If you are able to donate a box, we would be extremely grateful. Thank you in advance for your support.
