Dear Parents and Carers,
Over the last fortnight we have had lots of visitors to the school who continue to remind us of what a special place Lark Rise is for the children to learn. This is so lovely to hear; huge thanks to our staff for the passion they bring to their roles day in and out and also a huge thanks to you, our wonderful parents, for ensuring that our communication is as strong as it can be in order to provide the right support for your child. Working together is so important to us as it results in all children being able to reach their full potential. We were pleased to welcome Councillors Liz Jones and Eugene Ghent to the school today who enjoyed hearing all about the History topic that KS1 have been involved in this half term. The children demonstrated great confidence and articulated themselves beautifully based on their enquiry question; How has Dunstable high street changed over the years? This was a great opportunity for them to see how to present their learning with a real purpose in mind. Huge thanks to our visitors for joining us.
Over the last two weeks there have been some wonderful enrichment opportunities provided for the children which have ensured that the learning has been brought to life and enabled them to develop confidence and character. I was delighted to receive a front row seat for the Chiltern Learning Trust Busking event hosted by Denbigh High school. Our children were the only primary school in attendance but they did not let that stop them from putting on an extremely polished and engaging performance; their confidence was through the roof and their singing and overall performance was a joy to watch. Huge thanks to the parents and carers that came and supported this event and ensured they were able to collect their child after. Last but not least, big thanks to the incredible Miss Slough and Miss Spokes who have been rehearsing with our choir in school to ensure they were performance ready and have continued to nurture such great talent. Continuing on the theme of music and performance, all the adults in school were so impressed with our end of half term music showcase in the hall where each key stage performs to one another. KS1 had made the effort with their rock star accessories for the occasion in keeping with their song but the all round performances from each of the key stages were phenomenal. So much so that we would like to award the children with a non-uniform day after half term, date to be confirmed.
This week the children in LKS2 were welcomed to Hogwarts for an immersive day linked to their English key text, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. We have tried to capture this on social media for you so that you can fully appreciate the day from start to finish through the eyes of the children, however I am sure you will agree if your child took part in the day that it was a resounding success with so much excitement. Thank you for ensuring that your children looked the part for the day, I think this is definitely a 'magic moment' they will remember.
Last week it was Children's Mental Health Week and there was lots happening in school in order to continue to raise awareness around this important topic. Thank you to Mrs Hartley who delivered an assembly around this and explored 'the right to play' with the children through the book Children Who changed the World by Marcia Williams. We have spoken about the importance of doing things that we enjoy to support our mental health including playing, spending time with friends and exercise! We have raised a total of £329 for CHUMS through our Shine Bright Wear Bright non uniform day and a further £159.06 through the bake sale organised by some children in UKS2; well done everyone.
It was been lovely to welcome parents and carers into school during the last fortnight for Red Kites and Macaws class assembly. Both classes spoke so well about their learning and it was fantastic to see this showcased for parents; well done everyone!
Finally, we are looking forward to seeing all of our Year 6 children in school after half term at the slightly earlier start time of 8:30am in the run up to their Statutory Assessment Tests. The gates will open at 8:25am for a prompt 8:30am start in the classroom.
I hope that you all get to spend some time over half term with your families and I look forward to seeing you all back in school on Monday 26th February.
Mrs Romina Lang
Headteacher
Each week in our whole school assembly we celebrate children's attendance by playing a game of Attendopoly (based on Monopoly). The class with the highest attendance figure is rewarded with a class prize.
The winning class for the last week was:
Week of 29th January : Macaws Class with 98.1% attendance.
Whole school attendance : 94.3%
Week of 5th February : Parrots & Red Kites Classes with 98.7% attendance.
Whole school attendance : 96.5%
Our whole school target attendance for this academic year across all classes is 97%.
World Book Day
World Book Day is Thursday 7th March 2024 and we are looking forward to celebrating. We would like the children and staff to come in to school dressed ready for a bedtime story. Pyjamas, onesies, dressing gowns and slippers are all welcome so that the children can be comfortable during our 'Stop, Drop and Read' sessions!
Children are also welcome to bring in a favourite book from home if they have one or this could be one that they are currently reading to share during 'Book Club' in school.
We are also very excited that we have a book fair, where children can purchase books, in school on Friday 1st & Monday 4th March. More information about this and other World Book Day Activities will follow in due course.
Miss Hazell and Mrs Rankine are looking for some expert geographers to help children across the school to understand when they are learning about physical geography and when they are learning about human geography. Sometimes, they might be learning about both! We are asking you to draw two new logos - one for physical geography and one for human geography. These logos will then be used in geography books and geography displays around the school!
The competition has been assigned to all children on Google Classroom. The deadline for this competition is the first Monday back after half term (26th February). There will be house points and prizes for the two winners - one for each logo!
We cannot wait to see what you come up with. Happy geographical drawing!
This year the Reading Ambassadors have made suggestions for running a World Book Day competition. You can either create your own design for a book cover of a favourite story or design a sock puppet of a favourite story character. Entries to be submitted by World Book Day on 7th March when they will be judged by the Reading Ambassadors and prizes awarded. You can choose to either get arty and design your book cover by drawing it or you can use Canva to design your own digital version of a book cover and print it or share it electronically with us; the choice is yours! The Reading Ambassadors are looking forward to judging your entries.
We are organising an after school Easter Activities event on Thursday 21st March from 3.30pm to 5.00pm. This will be a fundraising event led by school staff for children from Reception to Year 6. Tickets can be purchased on Parentmail from today at a cost of £6 per child. The children will take part in an Easter Egg hunt, make Easter crafts and enjoy a snack and drink together. Please note there will be no after school clubs on this evening,
We will be saying goodbye to Mrs Baker (Teaching Assistant) today.
Mrs Baker has been at Lark Rise for the last four years working closely with the children in the key stages in which she has worked. Mrs Baker is leaving us to pursue another role working in finance.
We wish Mrs Baker every success in her new role and thank her for everything she has done during her time at Lark Rise.

Coins
Some of the children have started to learn about money, with other year groups starting their learning on this topic shortly. The children have been using our collection of plastic coins to help support them in their learning but to make it more realistic, we are asking for donations of any coins you can spare. If you are able to help, please bring them into school.
Guiseppe Archimboldo
Our Artist of this half-term has been Guiseppe Archimboldo. He was a famous artist who was born in Italy in 1527. He dreamed of following in his fathers footsteps to become an artist and began his career working in the royal courts. Archimboldo then started to realise that art was all around him and used nature to inspire his work. He used objects like flowers, fruits and vegetables to inspire his work.
Children across the school have been showing me their own wonderful creations using a variety of resources just like Archimboldo. A special mention has to go to the children in Reception who completed a special Art homework activity; their creations were AMAZING! Well done everyone.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
This half term we have looked at the classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. After making and performing our own Christmas compositions last half term it seemed like the perfect next step to study the master of composing himself! We learnt some interesting facts about Mozart, for example, although he grew up in a musical family, he taught himself how to play the violin and wrote his first symphony at just eight years old. In particular we have studied a very famous piece of Music of his called ‘Rondo Alla Turca’ see link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MF7U1QYS1zE
We started by finding the pulse to clap along to and then discussed the tempo of Lang Lang’s version compared to others.
Finally, we played body percussion along with the sonata ourselves. See if your child can teach you some of the moves!
Writing to be proud of (Year 4)
