Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to the summer term and what beautiful weather we have had so far to start us off! It has been so lovely to watch the children playing outside in the nicer weather and making the most of our gorgeous grounds; long may it continue!
One of my favourite events of the year took place on Tuesday this week; the Annual Chiltern Learning Trust Gym and Dance show. This is such a highlight for me and I love to watch the energy and enthusiasm from all of the children taking part. Our Lark Rise children did us proud with two truly amazing performances. They were high energy and polished performances; I was just so proud of them! Huge thanks to Christina Marks School of Performing Arts for choreographing and supporting the children with learning routines and getting them performance ready; thank you also to Miss Klausner for supporting them on the day. It is personal development opportunities such as this which really allow our children to shine and develop skills beyond the classroom; something I am really passionate about. Well done everyone and thank you to you, our parents and carers, for supporting your child if they were involved.
It was lovely that so many of you were able to attend our 'book look' evening yesterday. These interactions between you and your children about their learning are vitally important as well as providing you with the opportunity to see how they are progressing throughout the year. Thank you if you were able to attend this with your child.
Thank you to all of our parents and carers in Owls and Robins classes who were able to attend their class assembly today. I was sad to have missed it however I could hear the singing from my office during my meeting which was just beautiful; well done children.
I hope you all enjoy the long weekend together with your family and I will see you all on Tuesday next week.
Mrs Romina Lang
Headteacher
Each week in our whole school assembly we celebrate children's attendance by playing a game of Attendopoly (based on Monopoly). The class with the highest attendance figure is rewarded with a class prize.
The winning class for the last couple of weeks was:
Week of 13th April : Eagles, Falcons & Owls classes with 100% attendance
Whole school attendance : 96.75%
Week of 20th April : Eagles, Macaws & Peacocks classes with 100% attendance
Whole school attendance : 98.3%
Our whole school target attendance for this academic year across all classes is 97%.
We will be holding a Break the Rules day on Friday 22nd May when children will be able to pay a small charge (£1 per broken rule) to allow them to break the school rules for this day only.
Rules which can be broken will include :
wearing non uniform
wearing nail varnish or make up
crazy hair
bring in a soft toy
pack a treat to eat
squash in your water bottle
Payment should be made on MCAS.
Tickets for the Lark Rise Summer Party (Lark Fest) which will take place on the school field on Friday 3rd July from 1.30pm to 3.30pm are now available to purchase on MCAS. Tickets are £5 each which covers entry to the party - you are welcome to bring picnics but there will be an array of food and drink items to purchase on the day. This year there will be a festival theme therefore we invite children and parents to come dressed in their best festival inspired outfits.
Parking
Yesterday, we experienced a situation where the road leading to the school was so blocked that an ambulance or fire engine would have been unable to reach us.
When parking, please ask yourself: "Could a fire engine get past me?"
While we understand that drop-off and pick-up times are busy, the safety of your children is non-negotiable. Yellow lines and clearways exist to ensure emergency services have a clear path to our gates. Please respect our neighbours and, more importantly, the safety of every child in school.
We have noticed that some children are bringing toys into school with them. Please can we request that all toys are left at home as they are a distraction and we do not want precious person possessions to be mislaid at school. Thank you in advance for your support.
Hopefully the current lovely weather will continue throughout the remainder of the summer term. Please can you ensure that your child has suncream applied before coming to school and has a sunhat and water bottle with them. If you wish them to apply further suncream later in the school day, you are welcome to send in a named bottle of suncream for them to apply themselves - please note we cannot apply the suncream for them but will supervise them doing so.
We have seen a number of children coming into school wearing sunglasses. These are not appropriate or necessary to be worn in school unless there is a medical reason for a child to wear them so please can these be left at home.
Breakfast
We have noticed an increase of children arriving at school and saying they are hungry and have not had breakfast at home. Staff are spending time making breakfasts for these children as we can't be sure if they have actually had breakfast already or not. Having breakfast is a crucial start to any child's school day, fuelling them up for their day of learning and activity. For a child that has not eaten anything in the morning, lunch time can feel a long time away. We would be grateful if parents could ensure children have had something to eat before arriving at school.
Please note: If time is an issue there are spaces available to book in our Breakfast Club, starting at 8am, where they can have breakfast and a play with their friends! Further details can be found on MCAS.
Please also note: This does not apply if you are experiencing financial difficulties in putting food on the table for your family. If we are aware of your financial vulnerability as a family, any arrangements we have made still stand and we will continue to give your child something to eat if they arrive at school without having had something to eat in the morning. If we are not aware of any financial difficulties you are experiencing, please call or email the school office and ask to speak to a member of our Safeguarding Team in confidence. As a school we can signpost support, including the issuing of food bank vouchers for any family experiencing a financial crisis.
Stop, Drop & Read
We will be holding our final 'Stop, Drop & Read' session of the year on Friday 8th May from 3.00 - 3.30pm when parents/carers are invited into school to read with their child(ren). The children may have their school reading book with them from one of our well stocked class or key stage libraries, or they may wish to choose a different book to read alongside you on this occasion. Reading with a loved one is a special experience for the children therefore we hope to see as many parents/carers as possible. A Google form will be sent out on Tuesday 5th May for parents to confirm their attendance.
The eco-reps have been hard at work on our sustainability action plan. This term, our focus is 'biodiversity' and the eco-reps have helped plant some flowers in our eco-area and set up bug hotels and insect hotels. They were also delighted to discover that our ponds had frogspawn in which we will be keeping a close eye on over the coming days and weeks. A group of eco-reps also represented Lark Rise today at the Chiltern Learning Trust Digital Innovation Summit where they presented their idea for an app named 'Gifted recycle' - an idea where people can report litter which is collected and the materials are recycled. We are so proud of all the hard work of our eco-reps so far and look forward to what more they can achieve before the end of term.
Happy Birthday Sir David
On Friday 8th May, we will be celebrating David Attenborough's 100th birthday! We are inviting all children to take part in a non-uniform day where they can dress up in animal-themed clothing. We will also be taking part in some whole school activities throughout the day.
Tesco has launched its grant funding programme which invites schools, registered charities and not-for-profit organisations supporting children to apply for up to £1500 to improve access to fruit and vegetables. Please visit TESCO FRUIT to nominate Lark Rise to enable us to have a chance to benefit from this scheme.
There will be a change to the advertised menu on Thursday 21st May which is the school termly census day from which our school funding is determined. If your child would like to have the census day menu, please choose the main course option on that day on MCAS (NB it will say Minced Beef & Onion Pie on the system as we are unable to change it).
