Concentration
Definition: Is the ability to focus all of your attention on something important whilst also blocking out any irrelevant information.
Example: If I have good concentration this can have a positive impact on my performance in basketball. My concentration allows me to keep focused during the game when attacking and make effective decisions which allows my team to keep possession.
Motivation
Definition: Is a willingness or desire to do something. In sporting terms motivation is often linked to your mood or behaviour.
Example: If I have poor motivation this will have a negative impact on my performance in badminton as I will be less likely to try and return my opponents shots near the corners of the court. This will result in me conceding more points.
Anger
Definition: Is a strong feeling of being annoyed and can lead to someone being uncooperative.
Example: Anger can have a negative impact on my performance in football. When I lose possession I get angry and chase the ball and lunge into a tackle. This gives away a free kick to the other team and I get a yellow card meaning I have to be more cautious for the rest of the game.
Anxiety
Definition: Is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome.
Example: Anxiety can have a negative impact on my performance in swimming when performing a tumble turn. As I approach the wall to do a tumble turn I feel very nervous which means I overthink the turn and misplace my feet on the wall. This slows me down when coming out of the turn and I fall behind another swimmer.
CRE
Definition: Is how long you can perform for without tiring. It mainly refers to the ability of the heart (cardio) and lungs (respiratory) to continuously supply oxygenated blood to the working muscles.
Example: CRE can have a negative impact on my performance in rugby. As the game goes on I struggle to keep up with the play which means I don't get to the ruck in time to protect the ball. This allows the other team to counter-ruck and gain possession of the ball.
Agility
Definition: Is changing directly at speed whilst maintaining your balance.
Example: If I have good agility in basketball this will have a positive impact on my performance. I will be able to change direction quickly so that I can stay with my opponent which will put them under pressure and allow me to gain possession.
Speed
Definition: Is how quickly you can move part or all of your body.
Example: Speed can have a positive impact on my performance in football. As a full-back I can match the other team's winger when they are trying to dribble down the wing. This means I can put pressure on them when they are trying to cross the ball and gain possession for my team.
Consistency
Definition: Is your ability to execute skills successfully over a period of time.
Example: Having poor consistency for my smash in badminton can have a negative impact on my performance. This means that when I play a smash, my opponent has a better chance of returning them. This leads to my opponent returning the shuttle to keep the rally and have a better chance of scoring that point.
Accuracy
Definition: Is how well you can place a shot or pass where you want to place it.
Example: Accuracy can have a positive impact on my performance in hockey. When aiming for the top left hand corner, I can hit it precisely into this corner of the goal. This means the shot is out of reach for the goalkeeper and I score for my team.
Technique
Definition: Is the way you perform a physical skill. (Example: A topspin forehand shot in Table Tennis)
Example:
Communication
Definition: Is sharing information with teammates to support your performance.
Example: Communication can have a positive impact in football when I am looking to make a run in behind the defence. I can tell the centre midfielder that I am about to run in behind the defence so they can pass the ball quickly for me to run onto. This leads to me getting through on goal and gives me a good opportunity to put my team in the lead.
Team Dynamics
Definition: Is the way teammates interact with each other, either positively or negatively.
Example: Team dynamics can have a negative impact on my performance in basketball. When we are out of position as a team, we do not work well together when trying to organise our defence. This leads to the opponents getting closer to the basket and scoring.
Knowledge of Role
Definition: Is how well you understand and perform your role within your team. (Example: Performing your responsibilities as Point Guard in Basketball.)
Example: Having a good understanding of my role in rugby can have a positive impact on my performance as I can perform my responsibilities well. As a full-back, I communicate consistently with the players in front of me, telling them where opposition players are moving to. This results in my teammates being in better defensive positions and reducing the chances of the opposition breaking our defensive line.
