Treasurer -- Nur Academy


Position Description:


The treasurer handles the financial activities of Nur Academy. He/she is part of Nur administration staff, attends periodic meetings, and is responsible for maintaining financial and accounting records. Job duties also include implementing budgets, providing assistance with financial aids, keeping track of tuition and receipts, physically present on the premises during school hours when required.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a Treasurer


•Collects, sorts, and records the amount of tuition and donations.

•Accepts donations on behalf of the Nur Academy and records the amount and the donors name for tax purposes.

•Issues receipts for tuition and donations.

•Keeps detailed records of all financial transactions including financial aid documents and reimbursements.

•Works with ISOGL treasurer and deposits the funds into the Nur's bank account and maintains receipts for records.

•Pays stipends to teachers from the Nur's accounts.

•Maintains records of payments, donor information, spending habits, and more.

•Reconciles Nur's bank statements with the Nur's ledger, making note of any discrepancies and bringing them immediately to the Nur Academy's administration.

•Identifies fundraising and financial assistance opportunities to supplement Nur's finances.

•Tracks and assess finances and delivers periodic statement to the Nur's administration.

•Presents annual statement and budgetary needs of the Nur's finances to Nur's administration staff and executive committee of the Islamic Society of Greater Lansing.

•Participates in any financial audits.

•Inspires confidence from the other administration staff/members as to his or her integrity and ability.

•Attends meetings with the administration staff to go over finances and stay aware of any upcoming expenses, events, or changes to the Nur's operation.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


•Must have strong general competencies with bookkeeping, financial auditing, accounting, and processing.

•Must be incredibly organized and have an exceptional attention to detail.

•Must be trustworthy and honest in all dealings.

•Must be committed to the mission and goals of the Nur Academy.

•Must be willing to research and learn more about effective financial practices, accounting, and bookkeeping.

•Must be able to work well with staff, volunteers, committee members, and the Islamic center of East Lansing's leadership.

•Must be comfortable being supervised in a close capacity.

•Must be committed to the confidentiality of all financial information.


Education and Experience


•Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, or economics recommended but not required.

•Some experience as a CPA, treasurer for a non profit, or finance management is a plus.


Work Environment


•Time spent processing finances in Nur's office.

•Must be able to work on Saturdays and/or Sundays during/after weekend school hours.

•The position is voluntary (frequently unpaid) however, requires time, dedication and commitment from the successful candidate.
