Pick a Reading Partner (PARP) is a PTA sponsored program. It encourages children to pick a reading partner (a parent, grandparent, sibling, friend, etc.) and read for at least 20 minutes each day. PARP stresses the fact that reading can be both fun and informative.
Our goal at RPES is to engage students in reading at home and to help them develop a love of reading. PARP is a great time to try a new genre or read a book that's been on your reading list.
This year's PARP program is called A Marathon of Reading and it will take your child on a reading tour of the World Marathon Majors. Each classroom has a running bib that they decorated to represent their class. The bib will move throughout the different World Marathon Majors cities (New York, Boston, Chicago, Tokyo, Berlin and London). The more minutes your class reads, the faster you'll 'run' through the different cities and marathons. Each hallway represents a different city. Our program was designed to engage our students in reading and to enhance their knowlege of different cultures.
The class at each grade level that reads the most minutes, will earn the Golden Shoe. Students who want an extra challenge, will have the opportunity to become a Reading Six Star Finisher. This title refers to an individual who has read all 6 World Marathon Majors (275 minutes per marathon or 1,650 minutes total).
Back again this year is our "PARParazzi" bulletin board, which features students and teachers that were caught reading. On Wednesday, March 4th we will hold Marathoners in the Park (Reading Knight). Our annual Literacy Knight, A Knight on the Run: The Reading Marathon Expo, will take place on Thursday, March 26th.
