The reason I chose to teach at Langston was due an observed need in middle school. I had done a long term sub position in elementary when we moved to Greenville, SC. The students were ready for middle school when they left. I gradually moved into a teaching position at Eastside High School. I was curious as to why the students arrived to us unprepared. What happened in middle school? This became the thesis statement for my Masters degree. I noticed a lot of distractions in the classroom when the boys and girls were together. I explored what benefits if any would there be if they were separated from their distractions and got significant results. Langston was being formed about then and my youngest was beginning to drive to high school so I began exploring other avenues and Langston Charter Middle gave me a call. I was excited that the basis for this middle school was a separation of the genders and the rest is history. So glad I made the move.
