Strategies for Students

This ESL Listening/Speaking course was designed for students transitioning from an ESL program into college credit classes. To scaffold students on this path, we created 10 Listening & Note-taking (LNT) Strategies and 10 Research and Presentation (RP) Strategies for study and practice.

The OER lessons available on this site are meant to activate these strategies to help students meet the following key outcomes of the course (see all course outcomes here):

Integrate multiple authentic academic sources of information presented in diverse formats and media and summarize or ask and answer questions about central themes, purpose and key details.
Use a variety of sophisticated strategies to monitor own and listener comprehension, enhance listener comprehension, and repair misunderstanding.
Carry out both short and more sustained research projects
Use advanced search tools effectively
Evaluate the credibility and accuracy of sources
Cite specific textual evidence to thoroughly support the analysis
Present information, findings, and supporting evidence clearly, concisely, and logically such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, substance, and style are appropriate to purpose, audience, and task
Make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphical, audio, visual, and interactive elements) in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest
